WELCOME

Headteacher’s Welcome

I think the front to back of this edition of the Regents Review tells the story of Regents Park so well. Staff and students embrace the opportunities that the school community offers from dressing up for world book day to student leadership and amazing dancing, are just part of our vibrant offer. As always our ethos shines throughout the edition: RESPECT : The media trip to GottaBe, the trip to Saints and work experience all resulted in positive messages from external companies on the joy of meeting our respectful and confident students. PRIDE : The wonderful photographs, the food technology dishes, the Dance Live and our Cyber Ambassador winners all make us #GreenandProud CREATIVITY : The staff costumes, the new library books, the debate club, The This Girl Can Ambassadors and the PE champions all highlight just how creative we all are at Regents Park. CHALLENGE : Competitions, sports teams and PiXL offer students a real chance to try something new and develop resilience. To celebrate all the wonderful energy and commitment, we officially had ‘Creme Egg Friday’ on the last day of term, where I delivered over 900 chocolate treats to every single student and member of staff.

As we finish the spring term and get ready to enter the summer term, I would like to acknowledge two members of our community that are leaving for promotions in other schools. Mrs Cooper and Mrs Timmis have both given a huge amount to our Regents Park family and we wish them well in their new roles. Finally schools cannot get the best out of students without the full support of home, so thank you for all that you do to get your child to school. I would like to wish Year 11 the very best for their upcoming exams and I look forward to our ongoing work as a community to have the highest ambition for each other. Mrs Barnes Headteacher

GENERAL NEWS

Year 7

Year 8 We are now two thirds of the way through Year 8 and I’m sure you will all agree that this year has gone extremely quickly. It has been excellent to see students now concentrating on developing their work to show further progress in the build up to Year 9, where students will start to think about GCSE options. It has been a busy term for Year 8, with sporting fixtures and tournaments and an extremely successful Dance Live competition. Year 8 students have been fantastic through all of these events It is incredible that we are now two thirds of the way through Year 7 and as a school we are already looking at our list for the new cohort joining in September. It feels like yesterday that Mrs Blakely and I were looking at the list with all your names, eager to meet you and get you started on your Regents Park journey. Since joining us, you have all achieved so much: you’ve made new friends, settled into a bigger learning environment and grown up so much. I’d like to say a massive thank you and well done to those students that have been involved in extra activities, such as Dance Live, sports fixtures and the school production. It’s wonderful to see students shining, whilst putting themselves outside of their comfort zone. Up to the end of February, 166 ethos badges have been awarded to students. Congratulations to Millie-Lou and Jacob, who have already achieved 6 each! As well as ethos badges, it’s important to celebrate the success of our students who have attained a high number of achievement points. There are several fantastic opportunities available to students at Regents Park and I urge all students to participate in as many of these opportunities as they can. I have great pride in overseeing the development of Year 8 and look forward to carrying on sharing the successes with Year 8 students in to everyone’s favourite term, the summer term. I would like to celebrate the following who are currently, at the time of writing, at the top of our overall and half termly conduct leagues.

GENERAL NEWS Year 10

Year 10 have had a hugely successful term since Christmas. They have continued to mature and work hard towards their studies. Behaviour points have decreased and achievement points have increased. This is wonderful. At the beginning of March, Year 10 went out on their work experience with 129 students going to real placements. Students that completed virtual work experience, took up the challenge and enjoyed a session in school about apprenticeships. Work experience placements were keen to make us aware that our students had done well, suggesting how proud we should be of their work ethic and behaviour. It is always great to hear what I already know about our wonderful team. Now that Year 10 are back on site, they are continuing to use their developed skills to help them with their prep for GCSEs next year. We are quickly approaching Year 11. Over the next half term we have the revision day for Year 10 and parents’ revision evening on the 20th April. The race for Head Ambassadors will be starting and the real GCSE chemistry exam is in June. As always, please encourage your child to use our online platforms to start revising every day, in order to have a successful year. If you need anything, please do get in touch. Congratulations to these students who have achieved 100% attendance, since the start of the year:

GENERAL NEWS Year 11

Year 11 have had a fantastic start to a very challenging term, where they have proven themselves to be incredibly hardworking and dedicated towards their upcoming GCSE’s. This term, we as a school, have provided a wide range of different interventions to help support student’s development for their upcoming exams. This has included subject specific revision seminars, individual mentoring, targeted subject development lessons and tutor resources for Year 11 to utilise. As we push toward the inevitable GCSE exams, I want to continue to encourage Year 11 students to attend these revision sessions and create those everlasting habits to improve their confidence and competence for these exams. We understand that this time can be stressful for our students and also the impact it can have on their mental wellbeing. I want to take this opportunity to remind students and parents of the wealth of support that we have here at Regents Park and that students have access to this support at any time. Careers Year 10 Work Experience Our spring work experience has been a massive success! The amount of students attending a face-to-face placement has increased by 240% and over 87 businesses hosted our students. Teacher checks found some exceptional examples of student success, including students who have been invited back to work! Here are some of the highlights:

Students had a reflection on their placements and will be focusing on post-16 taster days and applications in the summer term.

“… was quite quiet at the beginning of the week, but he has grown in confidence.” “Nice having someone around who was so passionate and enthusiastic about the work.” “ … has been a pleasure to have and is a real credit to the school”

“Been a pleasure to have him here this week!”

GENERAL NEWS

GottaBe! Marketing Visit A group of Year 10 media students had a fantastic day of work experience in January, visiting ‘GottaBe!’ marketing agency. The day began with an introduction from managing

director, Tomasz Dyl and then students heard from different members of the agency, who enlightened students about their career journey and the current role. Students were then put into two groups in order to design a fictional marketing campaign for Superdry. They had to consider all aspects of the

campaign from press releases, social media and budgeting. They negotiated with different members of the agency team to get the best deals and to create the designs. It was an incredibly insightful day for the students and they gained many valuable skills during the process. Thank you to GottaBe! for hosting!

Dance Live On Tuesday 21st February, Regents Park competed in Dance Live at Portsmouth Guildhall. It was a long day of rehearsals and preparation for the students who were an absolute credit to the school. They performed brilliantly and competed against other schools and colleges from across the south. We were awarded a creative achievement award for our LED screen and all dancers should be congratulated on their hard work, dedication, and excellent etiquette. A huge thank you to all the parents and staff for their support in rehearsals and for coming to cheer on the performers on the evening. We could not continue to give the students these opportunities without your support. A massive thank you to Miss Ballard – this performance would not have happened without your help and encouragement and to Mrs Fishlock for her invaluable help with costumes! Mrs Anibaba

Library I cannot express enough how impressed I am at the progress of our Year 7 cohort with Accelerated Reader this year. When the winter edition of the Regents Review was published, Year 7 students had read a total of 2,704,959 words. This has now increased to a massive 15,160,166 words read in total. I wonder if we can finish the year at 20 million words read? A big well done to Miss Robinson’s 7BW class, who are still topping the leaderboard, with an intimidating 4-million-word lead. There is still time to topple them though! Rank Class Words Read 1 7BW 6,106,546 words 2 7BZ 2,499,618 words 3 7GZ 2,130,558 words 4 7BX 1,721,859 words 5 7GX 1,263,568 words 6 7BY 1,173,201 words 7 7GY 264,816 words However, in terms of progress to their reading ages, Mr Lucas’ class is top of the leaderboard, having increased their age by 10 whole months on average when tested in January. I’m looking forward to seeing which class will improve the most when tested in April! The first round of challenge ethos badges were recorded just before the Christmas break for the top 6 students in each class. Well done

Mathematics DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Further Maths We would like to wish the first Year 11 students to be entered for further maths GCSEs, the best of luck! After some amazing results in their recent mock exams, we believe in all of them! The Year 10 cohort have been set the following project as their current challenge, based on an A-Level coursework! Quadratic equations, and some cubic equations, can be solved simply through observation and algebra. Your project is to look at equations that cannot be solved this way because they do not have integer roots, and you will investigate how they can be solved using two, or three, different numerical methods. The numerical methods you need to research and use are: - Decimal search/change of sign - Newton Raphson Challenge #1 : Rearrangement/x=g(x) For each method, try to use a different equation and find at least one root of the equation, if not all of them. Some suggestions: x 3 - 2x 2 + 0.5 = 0 2x 4 - 3x 3 + 0.5 = 0 x 5 - 9x 2 + 3 = 0 Challenge #2 : Each of the equations below result in a failure for at least one of the methods - explain why. (2x 3 + 3x 2 - 4) 1/3 = 0 -5x 3 + 176x 2 - 9x + 0.1 = 0 x = (9x 2 - 3) 1/5 Challenge #3 : Use one of the equations which was used for a single method and find the same root using the remaining two methods. Compare how ‘quickly’ the three methods find the same root (how many iterations).

Maths Puzzle Move 3 matches to fix the equation.

Maths Mastery This term we teamed up with St Marks C of E School to develop our mastery teaching skills. We sent our mastery representatives to view each other’s lessons and discuss the mastery based techniques that are being used, and how to further improve. A concept discussed most was, using previously learnt skills to learn new content. For example, using negative number tiles to solve equations. Negative number tiles use the concept of ‘zero pairs’ as when together, they represent zero. Below is 4 pairs of negative number tiles. In total, they represent zero.

In the above example of solving equations with variables on both sides, the zero pairs have been used to explain how to rearrange to isolate the variable. As this concept is already familiar with students, it makes the idea of adding or subtracting on both sides easier to understand as we can see where the numbers ‘disappear’.

Why do GCSE Statistics? In Year 10, we offer an additional maths-based GCSE, which focuses on the statistics part of our syllabus. It is a great opportunity for students to support their learning in maths and extend it on to topics which will be covered at A level. During their studies, students will be expected to carry out their own experiments and analyse their results. These have included: testing the human brain (reflex skills), predicting the classes’ basketball skills and holiday destinations. By the end of Year 11, students will have gained an additional GCSE, which will look very appealing to employers and help support any A levels in maths, economics, business studies etc.

However, individuals even successfully studying maths to GCSE or A-Level, are at an advantage in the workplace, developing skills such as problem solving, analysis and data handling, which can be applied to practically any job. Students also received digital World Book Day ‘coupons’ this year! Students enjoyed World Book Day themed lessons, as well as this year’s ‘Story in Six Parts’ being read by teachers from across the school. Film Studies Year 10 Film Studies students have been working incredibly hard within their study of all of the component 1 films required for their GCSE: Attack the Block, Tsotsi, and District 9. Their study of mise-en scene, aesthetic, narrative and representations is complex and their work has proved to

be excellent in quality. Their mock exam next term, will offer them an opportunity to demonstrate all of the skill and knowledge they have accumulated throughout the year. Year 9 Film Studies students have demonstrated an ever-insatiable appetite for

new genres, terminology, perspectives and skills. They have developed their practical skills in a screenplay and subsequent production of a ‘monologues’ project centred about dark characters. We’ve experimented with lighting, tripods and new editing software, that has produced some excellent films.

Media Studies Year 10 media studies students, have nearly finished all of their component 1 products. We have studied: GQ, Pride Magazine, Quality Street, This Girl Can, The Man With The Golden Gun, No Time To Die, the 007.com website, Fortnite, the Fortnite website, The Archers to name but a few! We’ve moved on to studying Brexit and its representation in The Sun and in The Guardian – a complex and interesting topic! They have produced a magazine front page and double spread this term, both of which have

been of excellent quality. They are excited to begin their official non-exam assessment next half term. Year 11 media studies students have completed another mock exam, which demonstrates the huge increase in confidence when tackling complex issues of representations of gender and ethnicity in the media today. We have also officially completed our non-exam assessment of a DVD cover and banner poster for an original rom-com or sci-fi film. So, all in all, a huge term for Year 11 media studies students. This year, the science department is offering a number of clubs / activities aimed at supporting students with their learning and their enjoyment of all sciences: The Year 7 and Year 8 science club, which runs on

Tuesdays after school - Mrs Khan offers Key Stage 3 students, to carry out practical activities and challenges focussed on STEM subjects (science technology, engineering and mathematics). This has proven to be a big success in improving the profile of science at Regents Park. After the interruptions to learning in the last three years, Regents Park is now returning to normality and soon will be offering opportunities for more out of school activities and trips.

Creative Arts & DT Year 7 Food Tech Year 7s are learning about sustainable and seasonal eating this term, with a range of delicious recipes, starting off with peeling and knife skills to develop

their confidence. They have been making scrumptious recipes in the kitchen such as: fruit salads, seasonal vegetable cous cous, scones and fruit crumble.

Year 8 Art Year 8s completed their final piece inspired by Jasper Johns, using a range of materials including: oil pastels, watercolour, coloured pencils and paint. They have now started a new project inspired by the late artist, Wayne Thiebaud. Year 8 students have also recently started a project based on confectionery. They have been focusing on observational drawings of biscuits. They started with some fun-timed activities such as continual line drawings, changing dominant hand and contour drawings. They then built up the time given, to add greater detail and tone to their work. Students have moved on to using pen and creating backgrounds for their drawings and have really engaged in their work, making great progress.

Year 8 Textiles In textiles, the Year 8s have been delving into the interesting and fascinating world of the artist Hundertwasser. The students have been creating different examples of textiles including: weaving, tie die, hand-sewing and machine sewing to create a final outcome of a phone case.

Year 8 Graphics Year 8 graphics students have been studying Ben Eine, creating an information page on him, followed by designing their own letters inspired by Ben Eine. They first created 6 different ideas using a theme of either the sea, feathers or clocks. They then chose their favourite design, where they enlarged onto A4 art paper and used a variety of colouring techniques including pen and wash.

Photography This year, we have entered the photography competition run by Ringwood school again. It was great to get involved in working collaboratively with so many schools. We had an amazing number of entries and we look forward to hearing who makes the finals. Here are a few of our entries.

Theatre for Life Workshop On Monday 6th March, ‘Theatre for Life’ visited our Year 9 and 10 BTEC performing arts students and spent the day exploring the ‘brain’. Students took part in a full day workshop and escape room experience with ‘Theatre for Life’ and Solent University. They were immersed in an interactive light-up brain dome and rounded off with a session from a carer at the dementia support service ‘Remind’, about breaking down stigma around dementia and supporting loved ones living with the illness. They looked creatively at how the brain works, functions, grows and expands, to explain how change for the better is possible i.e. with mental health recovery, linked to dementia and other diseases. They took part in a performance based around their findings and talked to professionals from Southampton University and ‘Solent Mind’. They also explored how negative VS positive lifestyle choices students make today around diet and use of technology, can reduce their chances of early onset dementia by an unimaginable 40%. The interactive ‘escape room’ experience organised

by LifeLab at University of Southampton, which blends science and art together, helped them explore how the ‘Theatre for Life’ could create a piece of performance, which they will bring back to school and perform once they have developed it. The students enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to seeing the work within the final performance. An outstanding experience for our students, not only linking science with the arts, but also the effects of our everyday life and how it can impact us later on. Well done Year 9 & 10 – great work! Mrs. Freeman

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Physical Education Football Round Up

The Year 10 football team have come up against some strong opposition in the league this season. However, they have produced some fantastic team performances against teams who gave consisted of 5 or more academy players. The season has been troubled and we’ve struggled to get a good run of games together, but the team’s positivity and committing has been exemplary. Good luck in the remaining games!

This half term, girls football club has started back up again, where we have seen a keen intake of new students attending training and joining our Years 7, 8 and Years 9, 10 teams. We are proud of the growth and development of girls football at Regents Park and are proud to see this in the representation through our teams. The Year 7 football team have had a great season, which has consisted of some fantastic wins and some really intense competition against other schools. We are very proud of the team, as they have always upheld the values and ethos of Regents Park through positive sportsmanship and respect. Every player has represented the school through each game with integrity, to which we could not be prouder. It has been a pleasure to oversee the progress of Year 8 in the Southampton Schools League this season. We have consistently had over 25 boys to training sessions weekly and lots have been given the opportunity to represent the school in fixtures. The boys have shown a real sense of the Regents Park ethos and have represented the school brilliantly. We have had nothing but compliments from other schools about the attitude of the boys and the teamwork they show on the pitch. We are currently sat fifth in the league with the highlight being a draw to Deer Park, who are currently 2nd in the league. At the time of writing, we have one fixture left in Year 8 and look forward to next season in Year 9. The Year 9 football team have played against a number of schools in the Southampton’s schools league. The schools include: Cantell, Redbridge, Woodlands and Oasis Lordshill. Unfortunately, we have only managed 1 win at the time of writing this against Greggs, 1:2. All other games we were in the fight, but unfortunately results did not go our way. All players represented Regents Park well, demonstrating great teamwork and sportsmanship. The Year 9 football team have been a pleasure to take to school and I really look forward to the last game of the season against Hamble. Go Regents!

TGC Ambassadors & PE Champions After the huge success of This Girl Can Ambassador and PE Champion Day back in December, students hosted their second major in lessons event, where they again, delivered full lessons to our Year 7 and 8 students. Further to this, our This Girl Can Ambassadors and PE Champions completed a charity swim and row challenge, with the aim to cover 21 miles (across the Channel!) to raise money for Young Lives vs Cancer and CALM. A huge thank you to everyone involved! Additionally, our This Girl Can Ambassadors helped out with the delivery of our Girls Biggest Football Session at the end of this half-term. Our aim was to have as many girls from Year 7 to 10, taking part in activities created by our ambassadors, followed by competing in a tournament. We are looking forward to having female role models from a local football team coming in for the day.

Go Lead Programme

This year, Miss Robinson has also implemented the Go Lead Programme, sponsored by Barclays Game On. This will provide the 12 selected students across Year 8 to 10, with the empowerment to design, create and deliver football activities to their peers, to engage new and different girls in football. It will also support girls to become activators, to understand what Languages Year 8 Spanish

leadership is, and to articulate and apply the skills they have developed into a whole-school initiative. We are excited to see what is to come from these students.

KS4 MFL The AQA GCSE Course for MFL consists of 3 themes. Theme 1 has a subtopic of ‘customs and festivals’, so we regularly make reference to traditions of the French-speaking and Spanish speaking world. This half term we looked at Carnaval with Spanish groups and La Chandeleur (Candlemas).

Year 8 Spanish students have been learning about food. They created their own menus. Here are some examples.

Language Nut

Idiom alert!

Using idioms in your written/spoken work makes you sound more sophisticated!

Il pleut des cordes = It’s raining ropes, i.e it’s raining a lot

We use LanguageNut for homework and when in an ICT suite. Every student studying a language has a username and password.
