WELCOME
Headteacher’s Welcome
As we enter the final days of the spring term, it is always a time to get ready for change. For Year 11 students they are studying hard for their summer exams and preparing for their next steps. Year 6 students have had their place at Regents Park confirmed for September and we have already started to prepare them for this exciting educational change. Even the building is in the process of changing with the first phase nearing completion with our new toilets and ICT rooms almost complete. Next term we will embark on the £1 million improvement of our design and technology block, which is part of the £4.2 million improvement work.
As always the spring term is time to recruit new staff ready for our increasing numbers in September. We have had the most successful recruitment process that we have had for many years with new staff joining us across the school and I look forward to introducing them later on in the year. Finally, as the weather changes please continue to support us with ensuring that all students wear our uniform with pride and embrace all aspects of our school ethos.

Rock Challenge As many of you will know it was unclear if Rock Challenge was going to run this year due to the company who usually runs it going into liquidation. Despite this the students and staff continued to prepare. I think all of this added pressure along with the very high quality of entries makes it even more special that...

Ski Trip
On Saturday 16th March, Regents Park travelled to Risoul in France via Turin airport. The skiing was excellent, there was good snow coverage and the sun shone all week. There were excellent views across the French Alps all week. All students made excellent progress. The French ski teachers commented on how much the students had learnt on the Lordshill dry slope, saving the students 3 days of basic training on the snow. One group managed to ski the 5km Olympic ski run to the village of Vars-Sainte-Marie on day 5. This is the first time the teacher had ever taken a beginners group to this part of the resort and he’s been teaching over 20 years. The evening entertainment included a night out in the local pizzeria, sledging, the luge run and even a folk music concert as well as games in the hotel. All students really enjoyed the visit and experienced being in a mountain environment as well as learning to ski. Regents Park will be running a ski trip in March 2020. Letters will be available with all the details in the summer term. It is an amazing experience to spend a week in the mountains learning to ski!

Year 8 have continued to have a solid second year at Regents Park. I am impressed daily with their hard work, determination and great team work across the year group. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Year 8 grow and mature into young adults. During the last few weeks Year 8 have had to really show their maturity when making one of the biggest schooling decisions whilst being in Regents Park so far. Your child should have brought their options form home to be signed by you and have returned it back to school. We are aiming to have the options confirmed by 20th March and will hold additional meetings for clashes /subject not running between 21st- 28th March. If all goes well we do hope to have KS4 option choices confirmed by 3rd April. I am very proud to announce that both our Year 8 boys and Year 8 girls have won their 5-a-side City Tournaments in Football against the other schools in Southampton, and may get the chance to represent Southampton

GENERAL NEWS
Year 9 We are now two thirds of the way through Year 9 and I’m sure you will all agree that this year has gone extremely quickly. We are now more than half way through our time at Regents Park and are now concentrating our studies on our GCSE courses. I have taken great pleasure in overseeing the development of all students in their options subjects and also the student’s development in to young adults. It has been a busy term for Year 9 with Parents Evening, Sporting fixtures and tournaments, PSHE Days and an extremely successful Rock Challenge, which we won!! Year 9 Students have been fantastic through all of these events and have been a massive credit to themselves by showing focus, maturity and success across all areas. There are several excellent opportunities available to students at Regents Park and I urge all students to participate in as many of these opportunities as they can. I have great pride in overseeing the development of Year 9 and look forward to carrying on sharing the successes with Year 9 students in to everyone’s favourite term… the summer term. I would also like to celebrate the success of the following students who have either 100% attendance or 0 behaviour points. GENERAL NEWS Year 10
Wow, where has the time gone? As we look back over the spring term, Year 10 have sat their exams and they were the last ones before the Year 11 mock exams. I am very proud of the students in Year 10 with their attitude and desire to achieve. I asked staff to comment on their thoughts of Year 10: “Year 10 are creative, intelligent, have a thirst for knowledge, want to do well, funny and a joy to teach.” “From doing my duty in the hall, I always appreciate the fact that they tuck the chairs away and usually respect their seating area very well.” “Year 10 are AMAZING and I adore them.” During this term I have launched a monthly reward system. The top four achieving students for each month will receive a letter sent to parents congratulating them on their achievements with a £10 shopping voucher. Students have warmed to this and there seems to be great competition to be in the top four. Congratulations to: Charlie Parnell, Daniel Chester, Karolina Gaudzinska, Ethan Whybrew, Liam Woods, Olivia Bearfield,
Kinga Kruszynska & Lauren Earney for January and February. Student Leadership applications have begun this month, as the current Year 11 Student Leadership Team begin to step down in preparation for their final exams next term. This is an exciting time as students begin to apply for Head Boy/Girl, Deputy Head Boy/Girl and prefect roles. Applications need to be sent to Mr Brown or Miss Reed. Some students are beginning to feel nervous as we approach the final year at Regents Park Community College. I have had numerous conversations with students during this term as we look forward. Please let the school know if your child is feeling the pressure, there is help and support the school can give. I really look forward to the summer term and wonder where all the time has gone. I wish you all a restful Easter holiday. Mr Sinclair Head of Year 10
Year 11 The sun is shining and we are almost there! I feel like I’m forever saying ‘I can’t believe it’, but I really can’t - we are almost there! Exams start straight after Easter holiday. Unfortunately, there no longer is study leave permitted, however all lessons that have finished will be replaced with revision sessions within school. Students will start to leave early as of 12th June and will be released from school on the 19th June. More details to follow after Easter. As we are running towards the finishing line with Year 11 I think it is really important to stop and think about what a journey our students have been on over their time here at Regents Park. I do hope that when they look back on their education, they say that it was a great time with
lots of friends, experiences and enjoyment. We have really enjoyed teaching Year 11 and have enjoyed their different personalities very much. Rock Challenge On the 6th March Regents Park went to Rock Challenge, Year 11 continued to support and plan for Rock Challenge, although we know how hard it has been for Rock Challenge this year and they won! I am immensely proud of Year 11 crew who continued to do well in their lessons and exams alongside working on their production. A real delight to see. Good luck for the finals! Even though Regents Park was struck down with ‘the bug’ in February, we still had 29 students who completed 100% attendance, they are:

Michael Gammon Marcos Gesteira William Greenacre Gary Hearn Ellie Heath Noah Hunt Azhar Imran Deveena Khela Oliwia Konieczna Callum Linklater

The finale of the celebrations will take place at Rhinefield House on the 27th June for the Year 11 prom! I cannot tell you how excited I am personally for prom. It is always a fantastic celebration evening and I look forward to seeing you all there. As per my email earlier in the term, students will have the opportunity to use a photo booth and have professional photos taken on the night that they can take away. These are priced at £10 per picture. I would like to thank all parents for their ongoing support over the past four years, it has been the most incredible journey and all students have made us so proud of their achievements. They do need to push themselves to ensure that they achieve their potential (or above) in August. Although it is not the last newsletter for Year 11. Library
Happy World Book Day ! The library had the pleasure of, once again, hosting some smashing activities for World Book Day on Friday 7th March. The theme this year was Roald Dahl characters and students were offered the opportunity to dress up as their favourites in our photobooth. Mrs Highmore was dressed as Miss Spider from James and the Giant Peach. We got a lot of hilarious photos, some of which can be seen below. Students were also asked to vote for their favourite Roald Dahl book and, after a tight competition, The BFG was named the winner! As you may know Roald Dahl’s own favourite is also the BFG, so it seems he would be pleased with the result. At the time of writing this, our book fair is still ongoing, allowing students to buy books with their World Book Day vouchers, this has been very well received so far with over £100 raised. In the spirit of World Book Day we challenge you to name as many Roald Dahl books as you can. Mrs Highmore got a high score of 20.

Careers Choices Performance
At the end of March, our Year 10 and 11 students were treated to a production addressing the issues around progression to higher education. It followed the story of Zoe, Alex and Shaun who are all facing decision day and have to decide which subjects to study but each one has a different problem. It highlighted how to overcome pressures from parents, peers and conforming to a certain path and we hope that it raised our students’ confidence and aspirations to pursue their post-16 goals! 2020 Revision Day As we approach the GCSE exams, our Year 11 students were supported in their preparation with a fully funded revision day delivered by TwentyTwenty Learning on Monday 11th March. It was so positive to see the year group in on a staff training day committing to gaining extra revision and skills. Students rotated around Maths, English, Science, Creative Revision and History/Geography lessons taught by external specialists and they also went away with a revision booklet to help them with the final weeks of Year 11. Students were overwhelmingly positive about the day and went away feeling confident for their exams! Big Interview On Friday 8th February, our Year 10 students put their interview skills into practice and took part in mock interviews. They had prepared their CVs in advance and demonstrated their maturity and confidence to our local business people who had come in to deliver the interviews. We had interviewers from Womble Bond Dickinson, Morgan

Sindall, Capita, Department for Work and Pensions and many more and they were all so impressed with our students and in some cases said they would even like to offer them a job if they could! The students said they found the experience really positive and felt supported by the interviewers. We hope this event gives them the much deserved boost they will need for the work experience in May and interviews for college next year.

How can you ensure your child is the next winner? Make sure the daily Tassomia goal is achieved as often as possible, remember the best way to use Tassomia is little and often, 10 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Tassomai is a self-quizzing programme that can be used either on the Tassomai website or in the Tassomai app which helps students to revise key concepts. You simply log on and complete 10 minutes’ worth of quizzes each day. This programme has evidence to support a huge impact on student attaining pass grades or higher, claiming that 95% of students who regularly used Tassomai will achieve a grade 5 or above, with 56% of these getting a grade 7 or higher! The software tailors the questions given to students to address gaps in understanding.
lessons all around the concept of journeys. Some looked at the how a hovercraft works and how they have changed over time, they then built their own CD and balloon racing hovercrafts. Other
classes investigated the evolution of life on our planet and the journey that life has taken. All students had British Science week assemblies. In the assemblies, we explored the amazing journeys of some British scientists like Charles Darwin, Rosalind Franklin, Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawking. As part of the journey theme we looked at some of the great British explorers from history. Who knew that Dr David Livingstone survived an attack by a lion!
We have seen great increases in the use of Tassomai this term. We have been rewarding the student with the greatest increase in their percentage, we hope our winners have been spending their love to shop vouchers wisely!
This half term we celebrated British Science Week. The theme for 2019 was journeys. Our Key Stage 3 students (Years 7 and 8) took part in British Science week

Year 9 GCSE Art Textiles Year 9 students are making a fantastic start to their first major GCSE Art textiles project. Students have been researching the four seasons with mood boards, observational drawings and mono prints. They have experimented with various textile techniques such as applique, free machine embroidery, reverse applique and hand stitching. All this research is now being used as inspiration for their creative corset designs. We can’t wait to see their final pieces of work. Well done Year 9 keep up the great work.
The Year 9 Hospitality and Catering group have recently completed an investigation into Italian cuisine. Researching different regions, chefs and culinary flavours from Italy has inspired them to create their own dishes. This is Jack’s creation, a roux sauce pasta bake, filled tortilla pizza wraps and a chocolate fondu sauce with cinnamon toast to dip. Fantastic effort all round, well done Year 9.
Year 10 Hospitality & Catering Inspired by the current series of Masterchef, we have been challenging ourselves within the kitchen brigade of Regents Park. The Year 10 class were set the challenge of ‘Tortilla three ways’ and rose to the challenge by making their own flour tortillas. They then shaped these using different methods and filled them with chosen ingredients. What a challenge, well done Year 10.

ICT Computer Science – KS4 Year 11 students are preparing for their GSCE exam in May practising exam style questions, there will be an opportunity for a revision session in the Easter break and all students are encouraged to attend. They can also use their books and the resources on Google classroom for their own revision. Year 10 students have been practising programming skills in Python to improve their knowledge and have started their NEA.
iMedia – KS4 Year 10 students have been completing their first coursework as part of iMedia. During the Easter break there will be an opportunity for students to come back and make improvements before submitting it after Easter. We will then be ploughing through the next 2 units which will involve creating a website for a travel blogger and an interactive guide for tourists to Southampton. Year 9 have been developing their video and graphical editing skills and are now beginning their first coursework. The topic will be to produce a Sci-Fi themed book cover which demonstrates a range of photo editing skills. KS4 Groups Sessions take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday in room 21 and students who need to catch up or complete work should be attending them. IT – KS3 Year 7 groups have been exploring a range of safety issues and developing their web design skills to create a microsite on that topic offering advice to other students. They have also been developing their skills
with sequencing algorithms and creating flowcharts for different processes. Year 8 groups began the year refining their skills learnt from Year 7 where they started coding using the software Python. This is particularly helpful for students to develop their skills in coding and programming which is the introduction to Computer Science. After half term some classes then started a taster unit for iMedia to help with their options. iMedia involves creating digital graphics for a particular purpose, in this case producing a film poster for a fictional film “Epic Adventure”. They have to choose the plot before identifying assets to use and modifying them using photo editing techniques. After School Clubs We have introduced a coding club on Tuesday after school, this club has been introduced after several students expressed an interest in coding. We are looking at both Scratch and Python software.
Year 9 students have been studying programming
techniques, are learning to write in pseudo code and also using Python software as our choice of programming language.
Year 11 CiDA Students sat their exam in January and the results were good, now they are concentrating on completing their coursework. There will be an opportunity in the Easter break for students to improve their coursework as the deadline is the first week in May.

Year 7 & 8 Girls Rugby Festival It was a fantastic experience to take a group of girls from Year 7 to play rugby at Winchester Rugby Club. Many of the girls had never played rugby before and it was wonderful to give these students their first opportunity to play. The girls began the day playing touch rugby, learning about creating space whilst passing the ball backwards. The girls quickly grasped the concept and as a result scored a
quite a challenge. All the girls had a fantastic day and I would encourage them to consider joining a rugby club. “I had one of the best
days; I got to have fun with my friends and play a really cool game. Mr Sinclair was really nice when I did things wrong and I really liked it. It was the BEST!” Rosie Pybus - Year 7 “I had fun, great day
playing rugby. I have learnt how to play and met some great teams. It was a fun and amazing day.” Sarah Rek - Year 7 Year 8 Boys Rugby Festival Year 8s attended a rugby festival at Southampton Rugby where they competed against a number of schools in Hampshire. All students were a credit to the Regents Park displaying many of rugby’s core values of: teamwork, respect, enjoyment, disciple and sportsmanship. For some students this was the first time they had played, let alone in a competitive situation. Unfortunately we lost all our morning games which meant we were at the bottom of our group. The groups were rearranged in the afternoon and we played the teams from the bottom of other groups. The games in the afternoon were much more competitive and enjoyable. We played some fantastic rugby with some ferocious defending at times. The students had a fantastic time and learnt a lot too. Well done Year 8.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
Sociology
Firstly, I would like to thank all of the eager Year 8 students and their parents that attended the ‘Options Evening’ and asked many thought provoking questions about Sociology, as well as expressing their interest in choosing the subject as one of their option choices. As Subject Lead for Sociology, this fuels my passion for the subject to see so many young students engaging with challenging ideas and topics. For the current students in Year 9, we have just finished the first of the main four topics within Sociology, the ‘Crime and Deviance’ unit. As previously mentioned in past Regents Reviews’, this unit covers a wide variety of topics including regarding prison systems, crime rates related to gender, age and ethnicity, as well as infamous criminal cases. This unit is a firm favourite of the students and they have successfully just completed their first assessment – a huge well done to the students. We are now moving on to the ‘Research Methods’ unit, where we look at how data is collected, the strengths and weaknesses to different methods and also ethical issues surrounding data collection. In regards to trips for Year 9, we have been lucky enough to organise a trip to the Central Criminal
In Year 10, we have been continuing the ‘Family’ unit after taking a short break. During this time, we have been getting organised with revision cards in preparation for Year 11 and any upcoming exams. With just over a year until their GCSEs begin, the students have been pro-active in their revision by making
cards for key theorists and
key sociological terms for all of the units that we have studied so far. The ‘Family’ unit is the third of four units that we
study, giving us plenty of time in Year 11 for revising and recapping the vast quantity of studies, theories and key terms needed for the exams. With their GCSE exams fast approaching, Year 11 have completed the final unit for the course, ‘Social Stratification’, looking at hierarchies in society, the welfare system and touching on to sections of politics. This is a tricky unit however it ties together all of the ideas that have been studied in Sociology over the period of the course. The Year 11 students will complete a ‘walking talking mock’ next week, where we will explicitly recap exam skills and prepare students to feel confident on how to answer questions and the key ideas to include. This will hopefully give the students a good understanding of the expectations that are required from them in their final GCSE Sociology exams. Revision sessions, that are available to all Year 11 students, continue to run after school on Thursdays (2.40pm - 3.40pm).
Court (formerly The Old Bailey) in London for the second year running. On this trip we will get the opportunity to visit old cellars, as well as viewing a live
trial on the day. In the afternoon, we will be visiting the London School of Economics (LSE) for a tour and lecture from a senior member of the Social Science department. More information will be available to parents shortly.

Penpal Exchange For some years, Madame Loubier has maintained a penpal exchange with a school in St Lo in France. The French teacher was a French Assistant in the school where Madame Loubier used to teach and they kept in touch for the benefit of children on both sides of the English Channel. On the first of April, English students from Regents Park will get to meet their penpals. They will engage in a dodge ball game and then share a Franco-British snack together. We are all looking forward to this meeting. French Idioms

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Humanities RE This term Regents Park Community College was awarded a ‘Gold Standard’ for the RE Quality Mark. Regents Park is the only school in Hampshire to have achieved the gold standard. This award has been developed to celebrate good RE in all sectors and phases of education in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. There are three levels to the award and we are proud that the RE team has been awarded the top grade, one of the only schools in Hampshire to have achieved this! Congratulations to the hard work of the RE Team for their effort and their continual success!
RE & English Revision On Monday 8th March the RE and English team joined together for the entire day to support our students in Year 9 and Year 11. Together, we practiced writing exam style questions that they could be faced with in the GCSE style question. These sessions were hugely beneficial and helped all our students to develop their exam answers and were a nice break from our standard lessons! Well done to both teams for their hard work and the students for their effort to succeed! In the afternoon the students were lucky enough to receive a talk from Mr Bryan Huberman. He visited our school again to tell the moving tale of his father’s experiences. The students were very respectful and found his tale very moving. “ I found today really interesting. Finding out what happened to the Jews in their homes not just the camps was really moving ” Phoebe Davis “ Learning about the Angel of Death was very moving. ” Franek Kruczynski “ I have found today very interesting because I have found many facts that I did not know. ” Alex Gesteira “ The thing I found most interesting was learning about Dr Josef Mengele. ” Kayleigh Shaw
Holocaust Memorial Day January 2019 As part of their history education, students in Year 9 undertook a day focused on the sombre events of the Holocaust. Students were in the history department all day and discussed issues surrounding the persecution of the Jews, the experiences in the concentration camps and the legacy of the Holocaust, including more recent genocides. Students found the experience to be very rewarding and informative as it gave them a new view of the event they thought they knew so well.
