Social Sciences On 10th June, a group of engaged learners took part in a unique educational experience at the heart of British democracy — the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. The visit began with a guided tour through the historic corridors of the Palace of Westminster, including stops at the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Students walked in the footsteps of past and present MPs, learning about the rich traditions, architecture and the daily workings of government. Highlights included viewing the Speaker’s Chair, the grand Westminster Hall and even observing a live parliamentary debate in action. Brian May was in attendance, covering a law about the habitats of badgers!

Following the tour, attendees joined a petition workshop, led by the Education and Engagement Team. The session focused on how ordinary citizens can influence change through the official petition process. Students explored real-life examples of successful petitions, learned how to write compelling and actionable proposals and worked in groups to draft their own. Our own MP, Satvir Kaur, joined us for this workshop and highlighted the importance of our democratic rights. She was especially pleased with the conduct and politeness of our students. The day offered an inspiring and hands-on insight, into how democracy functions - and how anyone, regardless of age, can get involved and have their voice heard.
