Regents Review - Summer 2021

The Regents Review Summer 2021

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Innovative Teaching This term the science department wanted to re-inspire our students. It’s been a tough year with live lessons over the internet, COVID-19 isolation and teaching from the front with face masks on. To reinvigorate students’ learning in science, we implemented our science ‘Innovative Teaching Week’, encouraging our staff to think creatively (but safely) about science lessons. The team were enthusiastic and certainly creative in their lesson planning! In his recycling lesson, Mr Muller played the guitar, while students encouraged recycling by rewriting lyrics to well-known pop songs. In contrast, Mr Makepeace’s was silent in his lesson and taught without talking. Mr Timmis had his students collecting information from all over the classroom. Our own eco-warrior, Mr Grainey had his class debating energy production method, whereas Mr Ashworth’s topical lesson investigated whether his class were ready to play in the Euros. Finally, Mr Ramshaw’s class made revision body suits. We all enjoyed Mr Ramshaw wearing a disposable jumpsuit. All in all, it was a great week, enjoyed by the students and the teachers alike.

the hard questions about the changes we all need to make to save the environment. Students had until the 16th July to enter the Eco Awareness Initiative competition.

The Science Department would like to thank the Royal Society of Chemistry for their kind donation of KS4 revision guides. These were really useful in supporting our Year 10 and 11 students in preparing for their GCSE Chemistry assessments. The guides were returned by their previous owners, and in true recycling tradition, are now being used by the current Year 9 students to prepare for their chemistry exams next year. We’d like to celebrate our top Tassomai users. The following students have made the most Tassomai progress in their year group. Y7 - Gayathri It’s also important to celebrate ‘bounceback’, with the following students having answered the most questions on Tassomai in their year group: Y7: Gayathri Y8: Belle Finally, the science team would like to welcome Miss Rendall to the department. She has been with us all year on placement, and has now officially joined the team. We are all really excited that Miss Rendall has decided to start her teaching career at Regents Park. In addition, Mr Muller will also be staying at Regents Park and we are very lucky to have him with us next year. We have also welcomed back Mrs Cooper from maternity leave to complete our team of science specialists. That just leaves me to say thank you and have a restful summer. Curriculum Leader, Mr Moth, has been liaising with the schools in our Trust to see how our science specialist staff can support the teachers and Science Coordinators in our primaries. He was very excited to visit Foundry Lane Primary School during this term, to work alongside the Year 6 teachers to plan an exciting day - the highlight of which was heart dissections as part of the human body topic currently being worked on by the Year 6 students. Mr Moth enjoyed meeting the Year 6 students and their teachers and shared some of the exciting science experiments students do at Regents Park. During the month of July, we launched our ‘Eco Awareness Initiative’ giving students the chance to consider their impact on the environment, asking
