The Regents Review Summer 2017

WELCOME Headteacher’s Welcome Dear Parent Welcome to the Summer 2017 edition of the ‘ Regents Review ’. What a year it has been for not only Regents Park, but also the nation. Never have we seen Education play such a key role in the political agenda with all of the political parties during the snap election defending their stance. As with most state sector schools we have certainly felt the pinch and even though the secretary of state for education announced extra funding for schools it appears that the funding will be taken from other areas of our budget. I am extremely proud of what we achieve at Regents Park and again being nationally recognised as in the top 10% of all schools proves that we provide value for money and Regents Park has the top rating within the department of education efficiency indicator. With all the academic success of the school and as you can see from the newsletter the wealth of opportunities, we have become a very popular choice for parents. In light of this Southampton City Council are facilitating investment in Regents Park which will result in the school’s ability to increase its PAN from 150 to 180. The investment is intended to help the school with updating of the buildings and amenities.

This is an image that you will see in and around school and it sums up the vision for Regents Park. In a turbulent year within this country and abroad it was with P ride that our students continue to show R espect in the way they respond to human disaster. The events such as Rock Challenge, X Factor, The art/photography exhibition, C ommunity Fete and innovative teaching weeks demonstrate our commitment to C reativity. My vision for the school next year is to continue to Challenge all students to achieve better than they thought was possible. Finally, I wish all parents, community members, staff and students a very restful, relaxing and safe

summer break. Jonty Archibald Headteacher @regentsparkhead

parents of the required school uniform and parents had the opportunity to meet with key staff who will be involved when their child goes into Year 7. Governors are always pleased to be invited to attend events during the year, for example, Rock Challenge. This year, Regents Park students took their inspiration from ‘1984’ by George Orwell and ‘Big Brother’ was key to their performance. Regents Park won their heat in Southampton and went on to compete in the regional finals held in Portsmouth, winning several awards on the night. Congratulations to all those involved. As I write this, governors are looking forward to attending the ‘X Factor’ singing talent event and the first ever Regents Park fete. A fete on this scale has taken a lot of organising and I hope the weather holds! Finally, I would like to wish you a happy summer holiday and hope the weather hold once school is finished for the summer. Beverley Higlett

governors - Jon Greenacre and Marcus Warder; five co-opted governors – Ian Fielder, Dave Davenport, Hayley Ryan, Claire McGougan and Stephen Godwin (who joined us in September 2016); one staff governor - Una Rogers and myself as the Local Authority governor and Chair of Governors. The associate governors have remained and they are Sam Barnes, Senior Deputy Headteacher, Jim Henderson, Deputy Headteacher and Carlene Amos, Business Manager. We have held two full governing body meetings a term and you can see the minutes for these on the school’s website under the ‘Governors’ section. It was lovely to see such a good turnout for the Year 6 transition parents’ evening this year. Students who will be starting at Regents Park Community College in September attended the school during the day and returned to the school with their parents in the evening. Refreshments were served, a fashion show informed

As we reach the end of another academic year, it is hard to believe that at a year has gone by! Since I last wrote about who the governors are on the governing body, we have had some changes in the membership. Alice Wrighton and Lisa Wilson had been on the board but left during the year. We would all like to thank them for their commitment to Regents Park whilst they were on the board. The current governing body is made up of twelve governors and they are: Jonty Archibald, Head Teacher; two Co-Operative Learning Trust governors - Andy Withers and Donna-Marie Janson; two parent

Year 6 Transition: Biggest and Best?

On July 5th, 168 Year 6 students from over 19 different primary schools spent the day at Regents Park Community College. After a guided tour from the superb Year 9 student ambassadors, Year 6s began a series of special lessons. In science they performed a series of experiments including testing the acidity of various liquids and setting fire to jelly-babies! Collaborative painting was the focus of the art session and in MFL, students had taster lessons in Spanish or French! With the sun shining and the temperatures hitting 25 degrees, it was a perfect day for a dip in the school’s pool! Every group enjoyed a swimming lesson, with many students enthusing that this was their favourite part of the day. The Year 6s made an incredibly positive impression on the staff and current students, leading Assistant Headteacher, responsible for transition, to label this year group the ‘biggest and potentially the best Year 7 yet!’. In the evening, the hall was filled with Year 6 parents who heard the Headteacher, Jonty Archibald, outline the school’s ethos and values of ‘respect, pride, creativity and challenge’. Current Year 7 ‘catwalk models’, Minshal Muneer, Adrian Monteanu, Oskar Lewandowski, Natalia Nych, Chloe Gammon and Khadi Bah, then performed the annual uniform fashion show, before two other Year 7s, Dominic Masters and Emmanuel Egbe, shared student views of the school in their presentation. We look forward to welcoming Year 6s to Regents Park in September. The Teaching & Learning Student Voice team are a dynamic, voracious and pragmatic group of students. The group is comprised of students from a range of abilities and year groups spanning across the school community. These students are confident and progressive-thinking individuals who value the experience of being able to offer insightful and valid contributions to the Teaching & Learning Team’s work at Regents Park Community College. This term they have been leading an initiative that involves communication with their teachers using a range of stickers. Students have rewarded their teachers if they have felt particularly inspired, challenged and/or appreciated in their lessons. The feedback received suggests that teaching staff really value the students’ feedback and the students have enjoyed this variety of dialogue and claim that that they are already noticing the impact on their learning as teachers aim to plan lessons in response to their feedback. We hope to extend the range of stickers we use next term and continue to keep dialogue open between students and teachers.

GENERAL NEWS

Year 7 Year 7 have finished the year how they started it! Polite, respectful, motivated and enthusiastic are just a few of the words used to describe this vibrant year group they have grown in to. As Year 7 are now fully involved in Regents Park life they have sought out opportunities to go above and beyond. We have a group of very motivating and determined young people. They have created a performance to take to our feeder primary schools. They have represented the school at city athletics championships. Some of the girls have been representing the year above in a very successful rounders’ team. We have taken a group to the city wide university challenge event to represent the school. Inside the classroom the students have been making exceptional progress. They have been enjoying a wide variety of subjects and teaching styles.

This term we have been making the most of the school experience. The Year 7s have had a geography field trip to the New Forest Reptile Centre. We have also been to Boulogne in France for a fantastic trip. We really enjoyed celebrating our fantastic students in the end of year rewards assembly and thank you to those parents who came along to celebrate with us. I am sadly leaving Regents Park, but I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all the supportive parents, fantastic children and inspiring staff for an unforgettable year. I wish you all the best and look forward to hearing about how the students develop during their time at Regents Park.

Thank you,

Year 8 Another year is upon us, scary to think how time has flown. This year has been dominated by choosing options to study in Year 9. This is a new step for all subjects going to a 3 year Key Stage 4. Students have demonstrated maturity in their choices with an understanding of how their further studies can lead to career choices. I am excited by this change and I look forward to observing dedicated and motivated students making progress along their chosen path. Year 8 students have had an amazing opportunity to extend their learning and enjoyment through trips to Battlefields, War Museum, Cadbury World and Amsterdam. All trips have been well attended and enjoyed by all. I urge all students and parents to continue to attend as many trips as possible next year. Learning outside the classroom with these experiences gives a real and new learning perspective and most importantly it plays a pivotal role in enhancing classroom based learning. As a Head of Year, every day I discover the talents of our year group such as music and singing which takes place adjacent to the PE office. Not many offices can boast live music to work to! I am constantly learning from students with regards to computing skills and it evident that our young people will increasingly need these skills in their future work place. In addition I love hearing about students performing in sports competitions at weekends. I wish you all a restful summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you in September starting your GCSEs.

Year 9

WOW! What can I say, this year has been an amazing. They have worked together to achieve such great things yet again this year. We have been involved in many competitions around the school, including ‘Busta Rhymes’ with Miss Reed. Many students have taken on responsibility as department prefects and we have two sets of prefects from Year 9 going into Year 10 this year. Rock Challenge and the school production were huge successes once again this year, with many stand out performances from Year 9, I hope this continues in Year 10. We have added many new students into our year over the past months who have settled in very well, this has been a nice opportunity for students to mix with new peers from far and wide.

I am really proud of Year 9 for pushing through and continuing to break boundaries along the way, developing their personalities and their independence. Next year shows a massive change in this education, the start of Key Stage 4 and their options as one, but their work experience time will be coming up, alongside their Year 10 exams. X Factor was an amazing success with so many students involved from Year 9. Well done for all their hard work and dedication. It is amazing to have 16 students still on 100% attendance this year. They are as follows: Mia Breedon, David Brown, Emily Curry, Ellie Heath, Lewis Jones, Deveena Khela, Lewis Nott, Cathy Owens, Eveyln Pybus, Isabella

Richardson, Ranjet Singh, Edit Smith, Kacper Szafraniec, Joshua Thomas, Charlotte Webb, Annmarie Wilcox. Well done to all of these students. Speaking of work experience, if your work place is able to offer some support for work experience, please do let us know as there are always students looking for opportunities, Mrs Smith will be only too happy to speak with you about it. I really would like to wish all students and families, a happy healthy holiday and look forward to seeing you in Year 10.

As the Heads of Year 9 College Council we would like to tell you a bit more about our year. At the start of the year some students who want to be part of the police force or within the police line of work, went on a takeover day to Redbridge Police Station. We also had a school trip to Lille (France) and had a great Christmas break. Students went on a DT competition trip to Romsey Rotary Club. Rock Challenge was amazing this year, as we won the heats but unfortunately didn’t place. Our whole year have enjoyed Sports Day and we cannot wait to go into Year 10.

Year 10

I have been very fortunate to lead Year 10 through the Summer term this year, and have enjoyed getting to know the students

prepared for their final year of GCSE preparation. Mr Holloway has also arranged an exciting reward trip to Thorpe Park on the 15th September, as a reward for all of the hard work Year 10 have invested into their first year of their KS4 courses. Please ensure that permission slips and voluntary contributions are returned before the end of the academic year. The entire cohort completed their work experience from the 10th to the 14th of July. Students worked with Mrs Smith and the EBP programme to find a placement that was suitable for them. Year 10 would like to thank Mrs Smith for all of the hard work she has put in to ensure work experience has run smoothly. We hope that all students thoroughly enjoyed their first experience of the

working world!

Many members of Year 10 also applied for Student Leadership roles, they went through a rigorous application process, where students introduced different projects and gathered support from other students. The group were then shortlisted further and then interviewed for their positions. Year 10 have had a busy term: completing their mock examinations in all GCSE subjects, attending their Work Experience placements and applying for Student Leadership roles. I am pleased to say that students behaved exceptionally well during their Year 10 mocks and have now had a true experience of what next summer has in store for them. Photography and art students also had to complete a 6 hour exam, where I was astounded at the quality of the work produced. I hope all Year 10 students will be happy with their mock results and now feel more

GENERAL NEWS

Year 11 Year 11 have worked tirelessly over the Spring and Summer terms to put themselves in the best possible position for their GCSE exams. Their attendance remained good throughout the year and their work ethic in school was excellent. Now that the exams are over it gives me a little time to look back and reflect on the last year. This cohort has been on an eventful journey with the school. They have experienced the uncertainty and heartache of going into special measures and the thrill of being judged ‘ good’ such a short time later. Their ethos set the tone for the school and they were expertly led by their Head Boy, Harry Smith, and Head Girl, Jess Crouch. I would like to thank them both for their efforts. They are a fantastic group of young people and I am proud to have been their Head of Year. It was brilliant to see so many of them at the leavers assembly and then at the prom. They were both

fantastic occasions that I will never forget.

I wish them all the best for their futures and look forward to seeing them again on results day on the 24th August to celebrate what we hope to be a great

set of results. Mr Holloway Head of Year 11

GENERAL NEWS Rotary Club

Miss Jones and two Year 11 pupils, Jess Crouch and Tayla Drodge, were invited to lunch with the Southampton West Rotary Club at The Concorde Club in Eastleigh. The Rotary Club generously donate money each year towards the school’s Rock Challenge performance and we took along some of the costumes and props that volunteers had made with their financial support. We also showed them the DVD of our winning performance in the Southampton heat back in February. The members were suitably impressed with the

quality of the choreography, lighting and costumes!

We gained a valuable insight into the wonderful charitable work of The Rotary club, chatted to its members and took a photo with the club’s President, Mr Grayson Williams, with one of Room 101’s nightmare spiders! We look forward to continuing this collaboration with The Rotary Club and to welcoming its members to future school events.

Trainee Teachers It was with a great deal of sadness that we said goodbye to our trainee teachers at the end of June. Mark Baseley (Science), Laura Ebblewhite (History) Jasmine Fison (English), Bill Furie (Geography), Pauline Genevet (MFL) Ruth Mc Clure (Art), Gill Tavender (English) and Lily Thorpe (Science) all made excellent progress over the course of the year and showed passion and commitment towards their chosen profession. It was a pleasure to see such sustained professionalism and enthusiasm over the course of the year. All trainees immersed themselves fully within the life of school including running extra- curricular clubs, supporting with revision workshops and sports clubs, assisting with Rock Challenge and participating in the charity fund raising quiz. All trainee teachers have been successful in securing NQT positions at a number of schools in Southampton (including Regents Park), Hampshire and beyond. This bears testimony to the expertise and dedication of the curriculum mentor team at Regents Park and their commitment to nurturing raw talent. I am delighted that Laura Ebblewhite, Jasmine Fison and Gill Tavender have been appointed to NQT positions in history and English at Regents Park.

GENERAL NEWS Summer Fete 2017 On July 13th 2017 Regents Park held its first ever Summer Fete. The weather was beautiful and the school looked amazing. We had stalls ranging from the Tombola and Hook a Duck to student’s savoury delights and homemade cakes. Local businesses took part and we even had a bouncy castle and a magic show outside! The students demonstrated their creativity and talent in the art and photography exhibition and their competitive side through the inter-active rowing challenge and football skills – against parents and teachers! Our local martial arts club created demonstrations in the gym and everyone had an opportunity to ‘Zumba’ or ‘Twirl’ on the basketball courts. It was wonderful to see the whole community engaged at the fete and particularly our immediate

neighbours that reside around us.

Lots of sweet and savoury treats were consumed and lots of raffle tickets sold on what was an awesome day and a fantastic way to celebrate Regents Park Community College – thank you everyone involved who donated their time and their gifts to make the evening special including Emma Vardy, ex student who is now working for the BBC who gave up her time to open the event. See you next year!

Library I cannot believe it has been a full school year already. Thank you once again to everyone that has made me so welcome here at Regents Park. It has been a year full of changes, hopefully for the better! I hope you all enjoyed visiting the library during the school fete on July 13th and found something to interest you amongst the books provided by Usborne books. A thank you should be extended to Mrs Freeman and Ms Bambrook from Usborne for making the evening possible. If you missed out on the fete we still have some second hand books available in the library for free. Accelerated reader results 2016 – 2017 Congratulations also to Hannah McArthur and Aaron Lacey for their Library Service Award. Once again a special mention goes to all my student librarians for their hard work this term. I am continuously impressed by how enthusiastic you all are and I hope to continue working with you all next year. Stay tuned for the winner of the 2017 reading challenge in the new term! Into University Year 7 and 8 students took part in sessions run and organised by Into University, an organisation which focuses on encouraging students to succeed in education and beyond. Year 8 students, who begin their GCSEs next academic year, evaluated their own learning styles and how they can use this understanding to help with exam preparation and revision. Students then learned about different careers and the qualifications and experience needed. Year 7 students focused on key skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving. Their practical sessions involved the human knot, blindfolded puzzles and line whisper drawings! Students competed as teams for points and prizes and one student from each year group won a memory stick in recognition for their positive

contributions to the sessions. In Year 8 this went to Daniel Gill and the Year 7 prize went to Riley Knowles. Thanks to Into University for delivering such engaging and productive workshops for Regents Park KS3 students.

English Key Stage 3 English Year 7

Chloe Gale commented: “I’m learning a lot about problems in other countries and why people become refugees.” Year 8 Year 8 have been reading short stories of a ghostly genre as they prepare to write their own spooky tales. They’ve been investigating how a particular setting can create a feeling of suspense in short stories like: ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ and ‘The Red Room’.

This term Year 7 students have been studying different novels with a focus on the context of the story. At GCSE level there is a requirement to understand the significance of the context of a story and be able to link it to events in the story. Texts include: ‘Refugee Boy’ by Benjamin

Key Stage 4 English Good bye and good luck to Year 11! So the time has finally come and we have waved a sad goodbye to Year 11, who have been a fantastic year group in English and Media Studies. Given the unenviable task of being the first cohort through the new 9-1 English curriculum, they have risen to the challenge and impressed the English team greatly. With no coursework to rely on and suddenly four exams to prepare for (including two closed-book Literature exams), it would have been no surprise if mass panic had ensued: instead the students took a calm, organised and dedicated approach that saw them tackle their exams with poise, composure and confidence. Needless to say we are eagerly awaiting their results! Similarly Year 10 have just sat mock exams in Language and Literature, and have demonstrated the rapid progress that they have made as a year group. Following hot on the heels of Year 11, Year 10 students have taken to the demands of the new GCSE like proverbial ducks to water. Their exam results have been highly encouraging – we are expecting great things!

Regents Reads! Year 7 and 8 classes have continued to spend a weekly lesson in the library, giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in a book. The expectation of students reading at home remains high. Did you know that reading can be therapeutic and can actually enhance your memory? In fact the benefits of reading are endless. • It can help to boost analytical thinking • It can help increase your ability to show empathy towards others • It can help expand students’ vocabulary

Year 9 Year 9 have been applying their creative skills in maths and have come up with some lyrics to help remember how to apply Y=MX + C to straight line graphs. Here is an example of some of the lyrics they came up with: “C is the Y intercept” “Gradient is how steep the line is” “Where is crosses is the X intercept” “Gradient is the letter m, this stands for this” “C is the Y intercept” Year 10 Year 10 have just sat a very challenging set of mock examinations; well done for their perseverance! The three papers are practice papers set by Edexcel examination board and give students a useful insight into what their examinations will be like next summer. Class teachers have gone through the test papers with students, who have already seen where careless errors could have been avoided and improvements can be made in the future. Year 11 Year 11 took advantage of revision sessions in the half term break and before school to prepare for the new-style mathematics GCSE, which students have sat nationally for the first time this year. The new 9 – 1 graded GCSE comprises three examinations and includes some of the previous AS level content. It also places greater emphasis on multi-step problem solving.

Miss Jones’ GCSE Statistics group sat the old-style GCSE for the last time and they prepared well for their examination, which was the last one of the 2017 series! We look forward to seeing them in August for their results. Numeracy Week Numeracy week is the second week in July. As part of this week, teachers across the curriculum have been preparing activities to highlight where numeracy appears in their subject area. All too often students equate numeracy with just something they do in maths and the aim is to show students that the basic skills of numeracy are needed in many different aspects of their learning and indeed in real life situations. Here are some examples of what awaits our students.

Numeracy Ninjas Congratulations to the following Year 7’s who have worked really hard on their daily Numeracy Ninja challenges in Maths and have received certificates for achievement and improvement throughout the year: maths skills including weighing ingredients and measuring size and volume of the sausage rolls. Girls Rounders Team To say that, being the captain of this year’s U13 Girl’s Rounders team, was an honour would be an understatement. I am so proud of the hard work and dedication that everybody put into the enrichment day, the training sessions and the matches. The effort that was put into developing individual key skills and teamwork flourished throughout the season, which ultimately led to Regents Park being placed 2nd in the city (and our team being the most successful in the school). Being a part of a sports team is like being a part of a family and I highly encourage anyone thinking of joining a club, to pursue it next year! It’ll be worth it no matter the outcome. We won every game apart from one – we won as a team humbly and we lost as a team gracefully. Our sportsmanship could never be questioned. I’ll never stop being proud of the accomplishments this team has achieved and how much we’ve progressed since our first season in Year 7. Thank you to everyone for the non-diminishing determination that you’ve shown and thank you to the PE teachers for helping us improve. Best of luck to next season! A million thanks to Isabel Pearn for exceeding everyone’s expectations due to her monstrous hit and unwillingness to give up, to Annalise Foley for being a strategic backstop, to Emily Norton for being a demon overall – from her bowling to her hits. To Emma Laight for stepping up to be the best 4th base, to Klaudia Reczka for her amazing catches, to Hannah McArthur for diligently backing me up at second base. Lydia Maclean for being my right hand and helping me with all of my decisions and finally to Klaudia Fiskewycz, Emma Gorsuch and Klaudia Szymczyk for

being the backbone of the team due to their incredible deep fielding. Thank you for giving me the privilege to captain a beast of a team.

It has been an incredibly busy and successful start to the summer term in the PE department. We had a full attendance at our annual Rounders Enrichment Day aimed to introduce and develop key skills necessary for successful play. Students participated in workshops to develop understanding of key rules, strategies and tactics and competed in a variety of tournament style games. Some of Year 7 have been fortunate enough to participate in an ‘Olympics’ style event held by Richard Tauntons Sixth Form College. They thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and were impeccably behaved throughout. Well done to all involved. On Wednesday 10th May we competed in the Southampton Schools Swimming Gala. Our students were fantastic and we came back with a return of almost 70% top 3 finishers.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Languages Able Linguist Day

We returned to school as very proud linguists and the students were even treated to a reward lunch with Mr Archibald! The MFL department look forward to maintaining their winning streak at further events at the University next year.

On the 7th June, ten Year 8 students were invited to participate in the Able Linguist Day at the University of Southampton. During the first part of the day, students were placed into their language groups and given the task of designing a new piece of wearable technology. Students were then asked to pitch these ideas in either French or Spanish. The RPCC students had some fantastic ideas, including gadgets to help posture and magic gloves! In the afternoon, they then had the opportunity to experiment with a new language. For example Italian, Mandarin or Arabic. During the final session of the day, they announced the winners of the French and Spanish categories, where the creative students had been very successful winning 1st and 3rd place in both languages, beating 10 other schools from the South Coast.

GCSE Languages Students who are studying languages in Year 9 will start to follow GCSE themes as part of preparation towards a GCSE in this subject. At Regents Park, we follow the AQA GCSE course. This means that the themes we study (in Years 9, 10, 11) are: You will be assessed on similar skills as in Years 7 and 8 (listening, speaking, reading, writing and also translation)

explored a song from a film linked to the theme. The group then created a series of tableaux and scenes about leaving and the reasons behind them. It was an excellent workshop and we look forward to the show being developed over the next two years. Mrs Freeman Head of Creative Arts

Performing art students from Years 8, 9 and 10 took part in a musical theatre workshop facilitated by a professional actor from the Mayflower Theatre.

X Factor This year marked the third Regents Park X Factor competition. As always, the response to the call for people to audition was staggering. Pupils from across all years turned up and the vocal standard at the auditions, during rehearsals and at the performances was very high. Everyone who took part made excellent progress having received advice and guidance on staging, performance techniques, vocal tone, breathing and how to use microphones. Rehearsals commenced in earnest earlier this half term, with the final performance taking place on the Thursday 20th July at 7:00pm. Mr Spencer was the charming compare of the evening introducing an array of musical titles including songs from Disney’s Pocahontas, Sia and Ella Henderson to name but a few. The winner was announced in the evening show following a performance by last year’s winners who were present to officially hand over their title. Everyone who was involved had a great time and the combined efforts of staff and pupils ensured the performances were a real success. Thank you to everyone involved in the process and to everyone who came along to support and cast their votes. Be sure to watch out for the X Factor again next year.

This term we curated an exhibition showcasing the amazing creativity and hard work from our Key Stage 4 art and photography students with an exclusive private view to kick things off. There was a fantastic turn out, with parents, students, staff and governors stopping by to marvel at everything from surrealism in painting and photography, to realism in drawing and mixed media. Our Year 10 and 11 students have worked so hard to create a huge array of imaginative and obscure outcomes, and we are proud to have this work on display for the remainder of the school term.

Careers Big Bang Experience

On Thursday 27th April 2017 at Hilton at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton our students visited one of the biggest careers event in the Solent region promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). It was a unique opportunity to discover different careers opportunities and be inspired by all that STEM has to offer. Here is what Ajay Singh (Year 9) had to say about the event: “We went to the Ageas Bowl for a science fair. It was fun and exciting to learn about the different jobs linked with science such as nurses, engineers and many more. The different providers made it really interactive and Totton College hosted a science quiz. I was the overall winner and won a £20 book voucher!”

Lidl Distribution Visit On Friday 9th June, a group of Year 10 students were invited by Lidl to tour their brand new £55 million distribution centre in Southampton. On arrival, students were introduced to the company’s aims and objectives and it was fascinating to hear about how the company had gone from opening their first store in the UK in 1994 to having over 600 stores today and to be opening some in the USA this summer. It was also insightful to hear about the varied careers available to students in the future. However the most impressive was the warehouse itself which is big enough to hold several jumbo jets! The group were able to learn a lot about the logistical side of the operation and how important it is to work as a team in order to be efficient. Walking through the freezer with the students with ice creams in-hand was certainly one of the most memorable parts of the day!

Humanities DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Rivers Trip

On Tuesday 27th June 2017 42 Year 7 students visited the Reptile Centre in the New Forest. The purpose of the day was to investigate which side of a river eroded the most. To find this out the students got into the river to measure its depth, width and size of rocks. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and got to see the river in action.

Amsterdam During June me and my fellow class mates went to Amsterdam. We went on the ferry to get to France, then we were on our way to our hotel and got setup. Later that day we decided to go down to the beach and there was loads of jelly fish - so I decided to stay clear of the sea! After that day we went to Amsterdam! Soon as we got there we were on a canal boat and saw many things such as some crazy leaning houses and a famous bench with locks on. We had a great time and would love to experience it all again!

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

Imperial War Museum On Friday 5th May the History department took 47 Year 8 students on a visit to the Imperial War Museum in London. During this time we explored the WW1 exhibition, the Cold War experience and the Spy section. In the WW1 exhibition students got to explore the “chill” of the trenches as they walked through a mock-up of a trench. They could hear the sounds and feel the “smell” that drifted through the trenches. To add to the experience, students were able to use periscopes to see “over the top” into No Man’s Land. They also got to see how they measured up for active duty! In the Cold War Experience, students were able to become real life spies and attempted to break the codes that had been set. Well done to Rodraich Hurnn who was able to successfully break the code – “Agent Frost lands today!”. Cadbury World Just before the Easter holidays, 52 Year 8 students went to Cadbury World for the day to investigate whether Cadbury was really fair trade and - of course - to taste chocolate! It was a fantastic day out where students learned about the whole chocolate-making process, from the beans to the chocolate being tempered into chocolate eggs!

All in all the students enjoyed the day and saw first- hand how history has shaped the country they live in today.

Competition The geography department has been running a ‘speak like a geographer’ competition. This is where students have to improve a sentence to make it more geographical. So far Zak Sbaa (Year 9) and Joseph Horsfall (Year 10) have dominated the competition winning every week! Here are some of their improved sentences: “Africa is a country” – Africa is a continent comprised of 57 countries on a continental plate. “Sudan is in Africa” – Sudan is on the continent of Africa. It is surrounded by Chad in the west, South Sudan in the South and Egypt to the north. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum which has a longitude and latitude of 320E and 150N.
