clubs or classes? Do you know that our swimming pool is open for an after school swim? This might seem like an interesting choice as the temperature begins to drop but it is one of the toastiest places in the school and with the frost on the ground it is almost a bit magical to jump in our warm swimming pool. A new list is available towards the end of this edition (page 27) so have a look and why not make it a New Year target to try out a club, you will see that we have a wide range on offer, something for everyone. As we end the term I am so pleased to say that all our amazing staff are staying within our community to support our ongoing improvement. I know you will join me in thanking all the Regents Park staff for their hard work and commitment this term. Enjoy your winter break and we look forward to welcoming you back in January 2023.
In this wonderful Autumn term edition of our Regents Review, our Green and Proud ethos shines bright. Despite the challenges that so many members of our community are facing the support that we all give our RPCC family has never been stronger. Families regularly thank us for the interventions that we offer, whether that is in school or outside of school hours, and we are always happy to listen and try to help. As Headteacher of our wonderful school I am inspired by our students literally every day and the school is full of smiles and warmth no matter how cold it might be outside. We have been working hard on improving the presentation of work and, over the last few weeks, I have celebrated improvement in this area with many students. This week I have also made positive calls home to parents to share my delight at the ever increasing achievement points across the different year groups, it really is the best way to end a day to take the opportunity to talk about rewards. Our after school offer has continued to grow this term. Has your child taken up a new hobby or skill and joined one of our amazing

Armistice Day On the eleventh hour of Friday 11th November, staff and students observed a two minute silence. Mr Barron played ‘The Last Post’ to mark the occasion. Students who supported this day, were also invited to a hot chocolate morning with Ms Webster.
World Champion Dancer
A huge congratulations to Adelina in Year 8 who became World Champion in the under 16 solo category, Assen dancing competition and made a semi-final in under 16 Latin category! This is a huge success as Adelina had competed against many other talented dancers from all over the world. Well done!
Library Revision Space The library is available to Year 11 students every Monday after school, 400pm - 5:30pm for revision.
Christmas Trolley Once again, Regents Park Community College promoted the Christmas trolley appeal. We would like to thank everyone who has helped to support this.

Year 7 What a fantastic term we have had. Year 7’s first day with us already seems a distant memory. It has been a pleasure to see students settle into life at Regents Park, find their feet (and way around the school) and enjoy being at secondary school. Friendship groups have started form and students seem to love being here. I have seen so much respect from students to teachers, to each other and to our school. The pride students take in their work in class is outstanding. When visiting lessons, I see the majority of students working hard, focused on the lessons and presenting their work beautifully. We have some wonderfully creative students in Year 7: from bird boxes in DT to kites in English. In addition, students have been challenged every step of the way. Some joining us not knowing anyone, others going to lessons that they have never studied before. Teachers constantly push students to progress, go out of their comfort zones and develop their skills. It has been great to watch you rise to these challenges. Year 7 students have been collecting achievements, the top 10 students for achievement points can be found to the right - congratulations. Students should be proud of their efforts and a massive well done to all those with high achievement points. As you can see Mr Branford’s tutor is winning the overall tutor competition for achievement points – keep up the hard work MBR but watch out, the other tutors aren’t far behind! Our overall attendance to date is 93.09% with an amazing 44% of students still with 100%. Our top 3 tutors groups for attendance are MBR (96.47%),
KGR (96.17%) and RKI (94.58%). We all know the importance of good attendance at school so please keep this going. Have a great and restful break from school and I look forward to seeing you all back to Regents Park in 2023!

Year 8 I cannot believe that we are now heading towards Christmas and we are approaching the end of the first term in Year 8. It has been brilliant seeing the work of Year 8 over the first third of the year and the overwhelming majority of students representing the school perfectly showing: Respect, Pride, Creativity and Challenge . At the time of writing, Year 8 have had the most achievement points out of any year group every week this year and we have received the most emails being sent home on a Friday for students receiving 10 or more achievement points in a week. This is a fantastic achievement and highlights the standard of work being completed across the board by Year 8. I am very excited about further celebrating the achievements of our Year 8 students and thank you all at home for supporting the students in their progress at RPCC. I wish you all an amazing Christmas and look forward to seeing all the students refreshed, recharged and ready to go in 2023. Year 10 As I sit here and write a review about the past term it feels strange that the term has vanished before our eyes. Year 10 continue to make me extremely proud of their attitude towards their studies, their behaviour continues to improve and their mature conversations about their future are overheard in the playgrounds. Although the term has gone quickly, we have crammed in so much. We have had singers in to talk about knife crime, the BBC came in to discuss their life stories - this was incredibly moving and they even visited us twice! We won the maths challenge at Redbridge School, attended the Big Interview, CV writing workshops, revision masterclasses and work experience chats. Somehow, we have also crammed in college introductions and a This has been a great start to Year 9 Key Stage 4 classes. This is the first term where students have been studying their option subjects and it is wonderful to see students settled and enjoying their lessons. Both girls and boys football teams have been competing against local schools. Results have been mixed, however all staff have commented how delightful these students are to take to fixtures, a real credit to Regents Park.

As we move ever closer towards Year 11, it is vital that students are already preparing for their exams, using the online platforms we have available to support them and attending revision sessions after school. Students should be spending at least an hour working on home learning or using Tassomai to support their studies. Attendance is also very important to gain the progress students want ready for college, so please aim for 100% attendance in school - we can support if needed. As always, I would like to congratulate the following for having 0 behaviour points: Continuing on from last year, each week we celebrate the students with top conduct point, as well as celebrating student’s birthdays in assembly. top 3 students in the year and the top class overall. This is updated weekly. As always, a big well done to all of Year 7 for their hard work. In just 3 months they have read 2,704,959 words. Ethos badges will be on the way to top students at the start of the next term.

We’ve recently added some lovely messages of support hidden around the library - how many can you find? There is mindful colouring, worksheets from Young Minds and the NHS, sticker books and puzzles are also available everyday. The school library is committed to promoting mental health and wellbeing and is always a safe space to go. Finally, the competition for Top Accelerated Reader class is well under way. We did it! On Tuesday 8th November we had our final verification visit for the Wellbeing award. We are absolutely thrilled to tell you all that we have been successful with achieving the award. This means that we are a ‘wellbeing school’ for 3 years! Year 11 had a real good opportunity to engage in relevant sessions as part of our PSHE day back in October. They rotated around the following 6 sessions during the day. • Summary of apprenticeship/traineeship pathways led by ASK Apprenticeships • Time to research their possible pathways, investigate/apply to colleges • Session led by Mrs Selfe covering mental health and exam stress • Session with Yellow Door covering the dangers of pornography • Sexual health session including condom demonstrations led by colleagues at No Limits • Fertility/pregnancy and the factors that can affect it led by the science department

GENERAL NEWS Year 7 PSHE day
Year 7 had their first taste of a full day of PSHE in November. They really embraced the challenges and sessions delivered during the day. • A session exploring fire safety led by colleagues at Hampshire Fire & Rescue • Examining antisocial behaviour and the causes/ prevention with Miss Fison • Session with Solent Mind covering social media • Session with Yellow Door covering what makes up healthy relationships • Science session covering puberty and periods led by Miss Rendall • Developing their teamwork skills led by Miss Robinson and her “This Girl Can” Student Ambassadors Year 9 & 10 Session with Professor Paws We ran a bonus event for both Year 9 & 10 this term, courtesy of Professor Paws who combines R&B with electro rap beats. He was able to play some of his songs before engaging our students in a really good discussion covering the topics of knife crime, discrimination and gang culture. This made for a fantastic session that both year groups were able to take part in. Careers Parents and students from across the school attended our post-16 careers fair in November, with all the key local sixth forms, colleges, apprenticeship providers, universities as well as Solent LEP being on hand to offer information and advice. Students were able to gather detailed information about their future options, whilst also opening their eyes to routes they may not have considered such as those offered by the Southampton Engineering Training Association. The guests were impressed by how engaged our students were.
Other Topics Covered This term, there have been topics covered as part of assemblies and tutor sessions including: PREVENT, wellbeing, adapting to change, alcohol & drugs, exam stress, online safety and pressures.

GENERAL NEWS BBC Share Your Careers Story
Regents Park hosted the BBC’s landmark centenary education project, ‘BBC100 Share Your Story,’ for a second time in December. This time the project aimed to inspire young people to achieve their career goals and help realise their ambitions. Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 were lucky enough to hear from three locally based storytellers talking about their experiences growing up, obstacles they overcame, getting their start in their respective industries and what they do day-to-day. The panellists ranged from the BBC Radio Solent news editor to a podcast producer to a theatre maker. The students found it insightful and asked some brilliant questions. Students should follow up the visit from the BBC with a visit to the BBC Bitesize Careers site, where they will find an ever-growing library of job profiles to explore across all industries, alongside careers advice and information about next steps in education and the world of work. Big Interview
Our mock interview day for Year 10s this year was so impressive. We can’t remember a year group in recent years of the Big Interview being so prepared with CVs and so engaged in the process. Students were rightly praised by our interviewer guests who ranged from Womble Bond Dickinson law firm to Drew Smith construction firm to the Ministry of Justice and more. The students were able to practice their interview technique in a familiar environment and were given tips on how to improve. It was lovely to see their confidence being boosted by the experience and we hope students will utilise these newfound communication skills in their work experience placements which takes place next term.

Mathematics DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Problem Solving in Maths This year in maths, students are taking part in weekly or fortnightly problem-solving lessons. These lessons provide the opportunity to critically think about the different methods they could use to find the solution. Students are given much more thinking time and work together in order to discover the possible answers, and it has been fantastic to see it raise the confidence of our students, as well as building their resilience. Problem solving skills are
Maths Mastery Our maths department is focussing on the Shanghai Mastery method of teaching mathematics. Part of the mastery approach is to develop a deeper understanding of mathematics through designing purposeful questions that bring mathematical discussions and problem-solving skills. We are currently looking at how to adapt maths questions to bring the most we possibly can out of them. Attending a recent maths mastery conference gave us ideas on how to do this. Maths Competition On Wednesday 9th November, 16 Year 10 students took part in a city-wide maths competition, which involved 4 other local secondary schools. The competition involved them working in groups of four to complete some problem-solving questions under a time limit. These questions involved students thinking outside of the box, and applying the skills they have learnt in maths classes to new problems. While results were being counted, students were treated to a lecture on ‘where
do numbers come from?’ This investigated whether numbers were created or discovered – the jury is still out! Within this lecture, many real-life mathematical conundrums were addressed: ‘Why is A4 the size it is (210mm x 297mm)?’ ‘Why is A4 called A4?’ For the answers you will have to ask one of the following students: Ezra, Lucy, Robyn, Lilla, Hong, Tyler, Natalia-Mai, Julia, Layla, Oliwia, Lewis, James, Eve, Lola, Stanley & Faith Finally, the results were revealed, and our students did Regents Park proud by coming 1st and 3rd in the competition.
All students were invited to a celebratory hot chocolate with Mrs Barnes on Friday 25th November. The Maths Department would like to say a massive congratulations to these students, and to express how proud we are of their exceptional problem-solving skills and teamwork.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS English Debate Club This term, debate club has welcomed a huge number of new members who have brought their wide range of opinions to the group! This term we have debated: • Should we eat meat? • Does God exist? • Are online friends better than real life friends? These topics, among many others, have led to brilliantly passionate and perceptive discussions. The students consistently demonstrate their Regents Park, respectful attitudes every week and we are very proud of them! Please see the images of our debaters in action. • Should the voting age be lowered? • Should cloning humans be allowed?
Southampton Schools Writing Competition With the idea to encourage all students to become budding young writers, in November Regents Park delivered Southampton’s first ever city wide writing competition, which was taken up by a huge number of secondary schools in Southampton! The theme of the competition was ‘Southampton Stories: be inspired by your city’, and students were able to enter poetry or prose, up to a 500-word limit. The response was phenomenal, with each school receiving a brilliant number of entries. The quality of entries was extremely high, and Southampton English teachers met at the end of November to choose the winners in each category, who each received £50 7bone vouchers.
BBC100 Share Your Story Back in October, the English department arranged a visit from the BBC. ‘BBC100 Share Your Story’ is part of the BBC’s centenary celebrations, where the BBC plan to visit around 400 secondary schools across the UK. Carefully selected BBC Ambassadors shared their inspirational journeys with students, inspiring them through the power of storytelling. The ambassadors shared their stories in three hour-long sessions to Years 8, 9 and 10. Each session ended with a busy Q&A, during which our amazing students earned prizes by asking some fantastic questions to our visitors!

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS National Teen Book Awards This term students at Regents Park have been participating in Speakers for School’s National Teen Book Club which is a prestigious event partnering schools around the country to share student experiences whilst reading a modern fiction text. This term we have been studying One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. The novel sets itself up to be a murder mystery in an American school narrated from
the viewpoints of several main characters. The novel takes inspiration from previous works like The Breakfast Club by John Hughes. During these sessions’ students have engaged in vibrant discussion around the themes and genre of the text and furthered their passion for reading. The highlight of these sessions is always the opportunity for students to engage with others around the UK, as well as professionals linked to careers within the novel and the author herself!

Media & Film Studies Year 9 & 10 Film Studies The students have started their course with gusto and our numbers have doubled since September! Students have created one short film and have begun on another – this one is spy themed and some of the outcomes so far look incredible.
In our theory lessons, we have explored the history of film and have investigated aspects of mise-en scene, particularly focussing on props and settings within Year 9. Year 10 have begun their first case study film: Attack The Block. An excellent film directed by Joe Cornish about aliens invading a council estate. It’s going down well so far! Year 10 & 11 Media Studies Year 10 media studies students have had a busy term! We’ve been spending our time getting to grips with our set products for the GCSE. This means loads of annotations and thinking about how social groups are represented and whether this is accurate and just. We’ve looked at The Man with The Golden Gun, No Time To Die, Pride Magazine, GQ Magazine, Quality Street and This Girl Can. The Archers and Fortnite are up next!

Film Within English As per our curriculum maps for English, we have three film studies units across the three years of lower school. This half term, both Year 8 and Year 9 have experienced their new, bespoke film studies units. Year 8 have been focussing on Disneyfication both as an art form and from the perspective of social analysis. Are the representations of gender accurate? Why do we enjoy and subscribe to certain storylines? How did Disney adapt classic tales? How are these norms now being subverted in modern day society? They’ve jumped straight in and become incredibly gifted with critical analysis. Year 11 Media Studies Our Year 11 Media Studies students have had an enormous amount of work to do this term and we’d like to congratulate them for their excellent behaviour and effort in their mock exam series.
We’ve completed our study of music videos, focussing particularly on Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, and TLC. It’s safe to say they they’re all die-hard fans now! Our coursework will be completed by Christmas. After this, we’re doing a little admin paperwork before our revision begins. We can do it! Don’t forget – options are just around the corner… we hope you choose to take Film Studies to GCSE! Year 9 have begun their adventures into Eastern culture by focussing on the works of Miyazaki, the creator of Studio Ghibli. They have focussed on three films: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle. The challenge within this unit has been incredibly high and we have pushed these wonderful students with their vocabulary first and foremost, but also their understanding and evaluation of very complex themes, alongside the study of Japanese folklore and nuance of story crafting through film. Well done to all students of Media and Film at Regents Park – enjoy the break!

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Science
The science department is proud to have a dedicated team of scientists able to deliver the Science curriculum to all student regardless of age, need and ability. The department also benefits from seven well-equipped, purpose-built modern laboratories that were recently comissioned. From this September, the science department has offered a number of clubs / activities aimed at supporting students with their learning and their enjoyment of all sciences. The Year 7 and Year 8 science club, running on Tuesdays after school - Miss Khan offers Key Stage 3 students to carry out practical activities and challenges focussed on STEM subjects (science technology, engineering and mathematics). This has proven to be a big success in improving the image of science at Regents Park.
The Key Stage 4 revision club - an after-school club delivering subject specific revision for students, in particular Year 10 and Year 11 wanting to improve their progress in GCSE chemistry, physics and biology. This revision club is supported by specialist teachers to maximise pupil progress and attainments. Following COVID-19 and our much improved GCSE results in 2022, the year 2023 will see the science department offering new and exciting opportunity to further our students progress and enjoyment of science in and out of school

Product Design Regents Park product designers have been busy this term! Year 7 have worked hard to make their bird boxes and Year 8 have made fantastic pinball games. Some Year 8s created additional features for their
pinball games, such as curved and bevelled edges. The new GCSE Design and Technology course has had an amazing start. Students have been able to work on their City of the Sea project, modelling and prototyping the potential cities that sit on or in the water.
The GCSE group have also had the chance to open an engineering box all the way from the James Dyson Foundation, which allowed them to dissemble Dyson products.

Year 7 Graphics Year 7s during their graphics rotation are exploring the world of typography and illuminated letters. Presented with a design brief, the Year 7s are thinking like a graphic designer to produce a brand-new font letter based on their name inspired by all the things they enjoy. Year 8 Art Since the beginning of Year 8, students have studied colour theory. This has led students onto learning about Jasper Johns, creating an information page about him. This is to allow students a taster of what GSCE art is like. We are currently creating a design, inspired by Jasper Johns, recapping on colour theory and developing new skills in a variety of materials such as oil pastels, water colours, coloured pencils and mixed media. We are very proud of their work and how they are developing as young artists.
Music Once again, the Rising Stars of Regents Park took to the stage earlier this month in their ‘All time Bangers’ concert, aptly named because each of the group performances were all popular songs that had been picked from various decades since the 60’s. Throughout the concert, students from Year 8, 9 and 11 took turns to perform various instrumental solos on guitars, piano and drum kit. For the Year 11s, some of these solos were recorded and will be used as their GCSE coursework. The concert also played host to three separate ensembles, the school band, the Year 9 GCSE band, and the Year 11 GCSE band who concluded the evenings proceedings with a four-song mini set which included the songs ‘Lovely Day’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Bring Me Sunshine’ and ‘Suspicious Minds’ We would like to thank everyone who took the time to come along and support the concert.

Year 7 Textiles Year 7 textiles have been hard at work creating celebratory bunting good enough to hang at the Kings Coronation. Taking inspiration from the Mexican Otomi people, Year 7 used their quickly developing embroidery skills to produce these colourful and vibrant bunting.
Year 8 Food Year 8 food created their own pizzeria recently when they designed and produced a delicious selection of pizzas, abundantly topped with home-made pizza sauce and scrumptious melting cheese. These delicious pizzas barely made it home as friends tucked in at lunch time.
ICT & Business Computer Science – KS4 Year 11 have just completed their mock exam for unit 1, and some students did really well. Special congratulations go to Katie and Olly for scoring grade 9. They are now revising unit 2 topics in preparation for their second mock in the new year. After school revision is ongoing on Thursdays and is open for any student that would like extra support in practising exam style questions. This will help to develop core knowledge to support with final exams in May / June. Year 10 completed studying units 1.2 and 1.3 memory, storage and computer networks. They
also had a chance to practise exam style questions for these two units by completing end of unit tests with some students managing to get higher grade. Congratulations to Hong and Freddie for achieving a grade 7 in unit 1.3. Year 9 completed studying units 1.1 and 1.2 system architecture, memory and storage. They also had a chance to practise exam style questions for these two units by completing end of unit tests with some students managing to get higher grade. DEPARTMENTAL NEWS ICT Creative iMedia – KS4 As part of iMedia, students undertake several controlled assessments covering different topics within IT. Year 11 students have been completing one of these controlled assessments, which is creating an interactive website to promote the local area to tourists. This will be submitted to the exam board in January for final assessment. They have recently been practicing their exam skills ready to sit the real one in January after completing the mock exam this half term. Congratulations go to Mani and Dagmara for reaching Distinction* in their mock. After school sessions are taking place for those needing to improve their previous piece of work or improve their knowledge of exam topics on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. ICT – KS3 In the first half term, both year groups were taught the importance of e-safety and how to be safe online. Year 7 produced informative presentations, while Year 8 created interactive websites. Year 7 moved on to a festival celebration project, with themes like Christmas grotto or other religious/non-religious themes of their choice. They have been using a range of skills with software creating different Office-based tasks like desktop publishing and spreadsheets. Year 8 have developed their knowledge from last year about hardware specifications in computers and making decisions about how to construct an appropriate computer, e.g. how much ram, what processor speed etc. They have also completed mini assessments along with their end of unit exams on peripherals, components and storage devices.
Year 10 are working on their first controlled assessment, which is to produce a visual identity and advert for a company that makes products in the metaverse. This term we have been focussing on the design elements and will begin construction of the final products upon return in January. Year 9 have been spending time on a selection of mini projects testing their digital editing skills ensuring they cover the key skills to prepare them for the assessment process in Year 10.
Enterprise & Marketing Year 10 class are working on their first controlled assessment, which is to design a backpack for Baslow Bag Ltd. This term we have been focussing on market research, customer profile and design techniques. After school intervention has been attended by the majority of students to improve or complete and work not completed during lesson time. Year 9 have started studying enterprise and marketing topics by producing a new product and had a fun lesson testing two types of ice cream to examine if they could differentiate between a real Ben & Jerry compared to shop own brand.

Stars of the Half Term Congratulations to our stars of the first half term, they were given certificates and treats. Well done.
Cyber Ambassadors Our cyber ambassadors have been supporting school events this term. As part of open evening they ran an information stand for parents and students covering knowledge of e-safety issues and testing our visitors for the evening on their knowledge. They also created a presentation on online hate and the presentation was used for virtual assembles for year groups, 7-10.
Social Sciences Year 7 Geography This term has been a busy one in the social sciences team! We have seen some amazing work from all year groups and have had many proud moments as we have moved through the term. Year 7 have made a great start to their time at Regents Park and they have produced some excellent work through working as a team. 7GY produced some amazing cloud posters using just some cotton wool! Well done to students for showing great creativity and pride in their work.
Year 9 Geography The Year 9 Geographer’s have made an excellent start to their GCSE studies and Miss Baillie was super impressed with their efforts in our recent Innovative Teaching Week. As you can see in the photos, they produced some amazing ‘memory sticks’. “Shout out to my Year 9 group during the ITW week creating their group memory sticks for remembering their case studies and tectonic hazards. I am incredibly proud at how amazing the class were with getting involved in the process, finding different ways to be creative with it and every single group member participating in it and finding their voices. They did exceptionally well in recalling the information after memory sticks were completed! REALLY proud!” - Miss Baillie

Year 10 History The Year 10 historians not wanting to be left behind also rose to this challenge in Innovative Teaching Week and produced some excellent memory sticks relating to their Conflict in Asia unit!
Year 8 History This term is also a chance for us as department to lead the school in reflection as we remembered the fallen soldiers from WW1 and other conflicts. Mrs Blake was proud, as always, to lead on these assemblies. The students across the school showed great pride and it was very moving on 11th November to listen to the sound of The Last Post from Mr Barron. Year 8 undertook their studies into the Great War and some excellent homework was produced for this topic. Well done to Ben who produced an excellent poem and trench model in his garden!
Year 11 Year 11 also worked very hard on their mock exams and we look forward to building on these results in the new year as we move towards their final exams!

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Physical Education
The start of the 2022-2023 academic year has been extremely busy for the PE department. Across the year groups, we have competed in 7 football leagues and everyone who has represented the school has been brilliant. All teams have shown fantastic determination, resilience and pride in competing for their school. We have now concluded the first half of the season, which will recommence after February half term. All teams have come up against some very strong opposition (including lots of academy players) in their respective fixtures, but a special mention to the Year 7 and 9 boys who are currently second in the table. Unfortunately, the Southampton City Athletics Championships had to be postponed at the end of last year. However, the event managed to take place in September. All of our students challenged themselves to perform as well as they could and we had a lot of top 3 finishes. With all of our relay teams making it through to the finals, it showed how strong a team we were! Our new team of PE Champions and This Girl Can Ambassadors, have been instrumental in gathering student voice to help shape and support our return to school. They will host their first event of the year week beginning 12th December, which will see all students compete for their tutor group, PE class and year group in a number of different challenges. We wish all the competitors the very best of luck and we look forward to bringing you the results. Our PE Champions and This Girl Can Ambassadors have also chosen two charities they would like to support this year. They are: Young Lives vs Cancer and CALM. This year they have chosen to set up an auction to raise money for the charities - we will bring you more information soon! They also hope to bring some additional events throughout the year, when we are able to.

Please can we remind students that they should be wearing Regents Park PE kit for practical core, sports leaders and BTEC sport lessons. Please can you ensure students are not wearing hooded jumpers as this can cause harm to themselves and other students. They are permitted to wear the Regents Park PE jumper or a plain blue or black jumper that doesn’t have a hood. If a student is unable to take part in PE, please ensure they have a note and their PE kit (they won’t take part practically but will engage in other roles throughout their lesson). If a student is unable to change, please contact their PE teacher. Please check your child’s timetable and uniform policy on our website to ensure they are adhering to school rules. DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Languages Saint Nicolas’ Day
Reyes Magos
6th December was Saint Nicolas’ day. Saint Nicolas Day is derived from the history of Saint Nicolas of Myra, a real person who lived in the southwest of Turkey between 250 and 270 AD. He was the Bishop of Myra. During his lifetime, Saint Nicolas developed a reputation for gift-giving. He put coins in people’s shoes and became known as the protector of children. The story of Saint Nicolas developed over time. At some point, Saint Nicolas was joined in his visits to children’s homes by an evil character who punished naughty children. In some parts of France, children leave a shoe out by their door or fireplace for Saint Nicolas on the night of the 5th December. If they are naughty, they will find sweets in their shoe in the morning, and if they have been good – some coal!
El Día de los Reyes Magos is a holiday celebrated in Spain and across Latinamerica. In the UK we know this as Epiphany. This is the day when the 3 Wise men supposedly visited baby Jesus and brought him the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In many of these countries, the exchanging of gifts takes place on this day instead of 25th December. Some traditions include: > A Roscon de Reyes – a crown shaped cake baked with sweets. Sometimes little white toys representing Jesus are baked in. > Leaving grass/hay in a shoebox, and water for the camels (think of children in the UK leaving a carrot and mincepie for Father
