The Regents Review Summer 2018

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

Science Tassomai has arrived! The science department has been introducing KS4 classes to the new Tassomai software (pronounced Tass-oh-my). It is a self-quizzing programme that can be used either on the Tassomai website or in the Tassomai app, which helps students to revise key concepts. You simply log on and complete 10 minutes’ worth of quizzes each day. This programme has evidence to support a huge impact on student attaining pass grades or higher, claiming that 95% of students who regularly used Tassomai will achieve a grade 5 or above, with 56% of these getting a grade 7 or higher! The software tailors the questions given to students to address gaps in understanding. We will be setting our homework through Tassomai for KS4 from September – watch this space!

Science trip to Natural History Museum and Imperial College London Mr Moth and Miss Moore took some Year 9 students to visit the Natural History Museum this term. Students explored the museum and marvelled at the new installation of Hope the whale. Afterwards, students went for a tour of the Imperial College London campus to experience what life at university may be like and had an opportunity to consider the benefits and careers available when studying a science degree. Ready for September! We are running a breakfast club on a Wednesday morning ( 7.45am - 8.15am ) and after school revision sessions for KS4 students, that will begin after the October half term holiday. Miss Groves will also be running science club for KS3 students on a Wednesday after school ( 2.45pm - 3.30pm ). We look forward to seeing you all! Big Bang trip to Richard Tauntons College On Friday 22nd June a selection of Year 9 students had the opportunity to attend the Big Bang Fair at Richard Tauntons College. The students could take part in exciting demonstrations and interactive activities, including sessions run by Exxon Mobil, an astrodome display,

exploring the BBC Solent Broadcasting Truck and a rat dissection. They were also shown a variety of STEM careers available to them through a speed networking event featuring a range of experienced industry professionals. Women in Science event This was an excellent chance for our students to listen to inspiring women from STEM industries and take part in an interactive workshop to promote STEM careers to young women. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about a range of different science careers they might previously have been unaware of and the route into them. These included roles in computer programming, PhD studies, medical professions and Year 6 students visited the science department for a transition lesson. The students were excellent, using bunsen burners and carrying out pH testing safely. We look forward to seeing the students join us officially in September as Year 7. careers in the Navy.
