The Regents Review Spring 2022
Mathematics DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Foundry Lane Maths intervention at Foundry Lane has been continuing this term. One challenge Miss Birch set was to estimate some of the World Records. These included the heaviest burger, longest fingernails, longest long jump and longest hair. Once the students had estimated the values, they then had to convert these into different units. Some students came up with some really close estimates!
Maths Puzzle
The actual values are: Heaviest Burger: 914kg Longest nails: 310cm Longest long jump: 8.95m Longest hair: 16760mm
We have really enjoyed supporting Year 6 this year and wish them all luck, in their upcoming SATs. We look forward to having some fantastic mathematicians joining us in September.
Further Maths The Year 10 further maths group have continued to meet on Tuesdays after school and have done a lot over the last term! They have investigated the gradients of tangents to curves to find a ‘gradient function’ - an A level maths topic known as differentiation. We spent a session researching potential college and university courses to see where maths could take them and consider their future options before making decisions in Year 11. Many of the students are looking at potential careers in STEM, for example software engineering, environmental engineering and astronomy. To increase the challenge even more, after learning about sequences as part of their Year 10 curriculum, the further mathematicians looked at proof of sequences and their general formulae
