WELCOME
Headteacher’s Welcome
The classrooms and corridors are full of students and once again we can hear laughter, see learning and celebrate the achievements in school. But as you will see from this edition of the Regents Review, the lockdown did not stop us from celebrating and learning even when we had to work from home in our virtual school. We are all so proud of how the students have ‘bounced back’ and as a community, we are working so hard to keep improving our wonderful school. One of the most important parts of being a Headteacher is to listen to the students and consider their views and ideas. This is something we do every day in lessons and around the school, but we now also collect their views regularly in our magic moments, hot chocolate mornings, college council and student surveys. It is always fascinating what they come up with and is so often a key part of our leadership discussions. Inside this Regents Review you will see some of the improvements we have introduced as a result of student feedback: “We are proud of our new lanyards that help reduce the lunch queues and it is great that we can now order our food in advance using the preordering system.” “The new bounce back logo is all around the school and we enjoyed voting for the best logo.” “We felt it was important for rewards to be given during lockdown, so we love watching the Roll of Honour video.”
“Live lessons were great and it really helped us with our learning. We requested some fun activities and you listened, the Great Regents Bean off, the dance competition, the PE challenge and our Virtual World Book Day were some of our favourites.” Next term, our Year 11 students will enter their final term and we wish them luck with their assessments that will determine their final grades. Year 11 will also be arranging their prom with a difference, under the Government guidelines and the current Headboy and Headgirl will help with the process to elect our new student leadership team. Traditionally, Regents Park ends the year with sports events, reward assemblies, swimming gala, exciting trips and this year will be no different, we will just be working out how to arrange them in a COVID safe way. Thank you for all your amazing feedback and support this term, it really has meant a great deal. Wishing you all a wonderful Easter. Stay safe Mrs Barnes Headteacher

GENERAL NEWS
Bounce Back It is with great pleasure that we introduce an important initiative here at Regents Park in the form of ‘Bounceback’. You may have seen glimpses of this on our social media platforms and website because now is the time to embrace this ethos. With everything our society and community have been through, and continue to go through, it has never been more relevant to be able to ‘Bounceback’. Together we are all working towards our return to school and ultimately the end of Covid. https://www.regentsparkcollege.org.uk/ parents/news/bounce-back-2/ Unfortunately, we are no longer accepting cash payments onsite. Payments can be made online or by debit / credit card over the phone. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and appreciate your support. Online Payments As usual, ScoPay can be used to top up student’s lunch accounts and to make payments for materials / trips. Please click on the link below to access this: https://www.scopay.com/ Preorder Lunch System We have an optional preordering lunch system now available. Students on free school meals can also access this service. For more information, please visit: https://www.regentsparkcollege.org. uk/parents/news/online-preorder-lunch-system- available-now/ Food will also be supplied in school, in the usual manner if preferred.
COVID-19 Page We have a page on our website dedicated to COVID-19, in respect of information and guidance. This includes all of the information that is important at this current time. Please take a look at this page, to ensure that you are kept up to date. https://www. regentsparkcollege.org. uk/parents/covid-19/ Roll of Honour Have you seen our final Roll of Honour video? If not, please click this link: https://www.regentsparkcollege.org.uk/parents/ news/roll-of-honour-feb-2021/ The Roll of Honour showcases selected students, who have been nominated by their class teacher for submitting outstanding work in that area. This is a great achievement, as there are only two representatives from each class, which goes to show the great effort that they have put in during their virtual learning.

They have written short stories, learned the importance of recycling, learned to bake and participated in many more wonderful activities. At the moment our Respect Ambassadors are participating in mindfulness March, where each day there is a new challenge focused around mental wellbeing. If you are in Year 7 and would like to get involved with Respect Ambassadors, please speak to Miss Gilbert- Twigg. Below are some photos of the wonderful work that they did.

The Great Regents Bean Off The creative arts department had a lot of fun running The Great Regents Bean Off (GRBO) for our staff and students. We had some exceptional entries and the students enjoyed practicing their creative skills when it came to food presentation. Wow, what a lot of talent we have from both students and staff and together we voted for our favourite entries. The challenge was to recreate the popular and nutritious beans on toast and give it a culinary and creative twist. Could this humble meal be given a professional finish for a fine dining experience? Here are the finalists and winners:
Sanitary Towels We have a large amount of sanitary towels in school. Please contact reception if you would like to arrange a time to collect a packet for free.

PSHE As part of lockdown, during this term - like the rest of the school, in PSHE we adjusted to the new styles of learning. Year 9 were one of the first beneficiaries of this. Their PSHE day took place on the 27th January. Students had sessions covering first aid, online safety, dangerous relationships, alcohol & smoking, exam revision strategies, healthy eating and mental wellbeing. Students had the day off from normal lessons as part of this and were able to work through the session in which ever order they wished, making use of the excellent videos and resources. If you missed any of the sessions or wanted to look at them again, they are still on the ‘Year 9 Team 2020’ group on Google Classroom.

As part of the Mayflower 400 project run by creative arts, we won a talk from Aaron Phipps, Southampton Paralympian for wheelchair rugby. He ran a session for our Year 10 students at the end of this term covering his life story and how he has overcome adversity and challenge along with ways they can also use themselves. A real positive talk where students were able to interact and ask questions.
There were lots of sessions linking back to Hampshire Police that our students took part in over the spring term. Year 10 & 11 had a session led by Omar Sharif, ( www. instagram.com/omarinspires) which covered: serious violence including knife crime, drugs, child criminal exploitation & grooming. This was a really good session, that was well attended and students were able to ask him follow up questions using his Instagram. Another session which some of our students were able to access was covering online safety as part of Internet Safety Day led by the police and crime commissioners office. Those that were able to access learned about passwords and how data can be shared very

Year 7 I am really pleased with how resilient Year 7 have been in their first two terms at Regents Park. When we put recent circumstances into context: Year 6 affected due to the first lockdown - resulting in lost education. Starting a new school without the normal transition package in place and to experience yet another lockdown straight after their first term at Regents Park and to return to school in the manner they have is just amazing. #GreenAndProud! Thank you to all those who accessed online lessons, students took to this style of learning really well. I must admit I found it strange teaching classes through my laptop, and I much prefer teaching in school, as do most of the students, learning. Let’s hope we do not have any more national lockdowns!

Wow! What a term. Year 8 continue to make us proud with every lesson (and lockdown). I am so impressed by Year 8s continued resilience towards their learning and ever improving ability to switch between online and in school classes. Whilst we were in lockdown for half a term, Year 8 have continued to be very busy. We have had weekly College Council sessions, which now include shout outs to staff for their continued hard work, we have had a parents evening, options event and even chosen all our options from home. As we now settle back into the new way of working in school, I trust in Year 8 that they will continue to look forward and push themselves to be the best possible versions of themselves. We have continued to have high expectations of Year 8 students and I thank you as parents/carers for your continued support in engaging students online and

Year 10 Welcome back to Year 10 and congratulations on a really positive start back. I am delighted to hear so many teachers talk about how Year 10 have matured and are showing readiness for their GCSEs. I would also like to take this opportunity to commend students on their dedication, resilience and hard work that they have shown over this second period of remote learning. Students have excelled in areas we never thought possible and it is amazing to see their determination, even in the face of adversity. It is so lovely to see all of the students again and I am looking forward to what the summer term holds for us all. As a year group, as we proceed into the summer term, we are going to begin to focus our efforts towards looking at careers and next steps after Regents Park. Students will be being encouraged in tutor time to look at colleges in the local area,
courses and their entry requirements and different qualifications available, as well as starting to put together a CV. Similarly to this, I have a number of students asking about work experience and at this moment in time, we are unsure what this week will look like. Please rest assured that even if we are unable to have a ‘normal’ work experience week due to Government COVID-19 restrictions, we will aim to do something, even if it is virtually! I will update you as soon as I get confirmation either way. Wishing you all a very restful Easter holidays, I am sure the break will be well-needed for students and staff alike! Lockdown Legends
This is one of the craziest terms I have ever experienced as a teacher. It has certainly proven to me, the resilience of our Year 11s and how much they will be missed when they leave Regents Park next term. Following the year groups journey since the beginning of Year 8 has been an amazing experience for myself and I take great pride in the achievements of every single student. It is now time for the students to finish their time off at Regents Park in the best possible way and put all they can into getting the best grades and continuing their own personal journey in education and employment. Over the last term, we have seen the students produce some high quality work online and in lessons. We have got used to communicating using technology and continued the excellent teamwork between staff and students that you would only see here at Regents Park! A huge shout out to the students, who still have 100% attendance, 0 behaviour points and the leaders of our conduct league. Also, a big shout out to the ‘lockdown legends’, who received the most achievement points whilst learning online.

The Future of RPCC During the last half term, Miss Birch worked with the Year 6s at Foundry Lane, to see what they have been getting up to in their maths lessons. The aim for this was to see what we can do as a maths department to make sure our Year 7s are thoroughly challenged and supported when they arrive in September. She sat in on some lessons, where students showed off their fantastic algebra skills, and then delivered a few lessons on metric units. Coming from Regents Park, Miss Birch was ready to really test the students with GCSE questions on converting units, but the Year 6s were ready for the challenge. The students then went on to complete ‘Best Buy’ questions - an examiner’s favourite, where students have to decide which item is better value for money, comparing both the weight and price. The students showed an excellent level of mathematical thinking and enthusiasm. It is safe to say that we will have some fantastic mathematicians joining us in September!

Rewards in Maths During lockdown, the Regents Park maths department revamped the rewards process. Students (and their parents) received certificates for participation, effort, homework, and progress. These certificates are delivered through Google Classroom – so students need to keep a watchful eye on their stream. Upon receiving a certificate, students are added to a random name generator – “The Wheel of Names”. The Wheel of Names is spun to reveal 3 lucky students who win vouchers. The more certificates a student has, the better chance they have of winning. So far we have had 3 winners. But there are plenty more to come! Good Luck! Science
Firstly, the science team would like to welcome everyone back to the department, it has been brilliant to see all of Regents Park’s young people back in the science labs. The team is now looking forward to getting back to normal and teaching some lessons that don’t involve a Google Meets code! Staff and students alike would like to thank the London Mathematical Society for their very generous and kind grant which the science department were awarded. We used the funds to purchase some new scientific calculators.

Sociology Firstly, I would like to say a huge welcome back to all of our sociology students and I would also like to take this opportunity to commend students on their dedication, resilience and hard work that they have shown over this second period of remote learning. Students have excelled in areas we never thought possible and it is amazing to see their determination, even in the face of adversity. The numbers of students that we had attending each of the sociology online classes was truly phenomenal and showed a great dedication to one of their chosen ‘options’ subjects. Over the course of the second remote learning period, both Year 9 and 10 took on the immense challenge of learning
the ‘Research Methods’ topic, which although is not a standalone section in the GCSE, it is interwoven into each of the other 4 units, making it one of the key elements of success for the course. Leading on from this, our high expectations of the students did not lessen, as we then moved onto the social stratification unit, undoubtably the hardest of the 4 main topics. In this unit, we look at class systems, caste systems, hierarchies in society, poverty and the welfare system. We have also enjoyed watching the documentary ‘Rich House, Poor House’, where we have been able to evidently see the impact of differing incomes, lifestyles and the impact that money can have on a person’s life. Similarly to this, students have been able to actively see Weber’s theories of Power and Authority through ‘The Secret Life of 5 Year Olds’, looking at how power and
authority is established, even from a really young age. In Year 11, we have focused our energy on ensuring we feel prepared for any upcoming assessments linked to the GCSE. Students worked incredibly hard over the lockdown period ensuring that they felt confident with the 12-mark essay questions, as well as brushing up on knowledge linking to the ‘families’ unit. In recent weeks, since returning to school, we have been completing lots of revision- based lessons, recapping our key theorists and ensuring that we are confident with the layout and setup of the questions. A huge ‘good luck’ to all Year 11 students as they approach the end of their GCSE courses, your hard work, resilience and determination over the past three years has not gone unnoticed.

Performing Arts Year 9 BTEC performing arts have been exploring the performance style of Commedia Dell’Arte both remotely and in lessons. They created their own masks during lockdown, but are now using the real thing in school and working towards a piece of assessment.
History of Commedia Commedia Dell’Arte, comedy of the profession, was created as a use of over emphasising the public views of everyday life. It was created in Italy by Francesco Andreini in the 16th century. It was performed through Europe and adjusted throughout the century. It consists of 11 characters: Magnifico – top, first and second actress – below, the witch – top centre, the Pantalone – middle left, the doctor – middle right, Columbia – centre, Brighella – left, Harlequino – right, the captain – bottom centre, and at the very bottom Zanni – the servant.
Year 7 begun a shadow puppet project in February and will complete it as part of their homework over Easter.
Year 8 drama students started researching masked theatre in their remote learning and they are now learning the techniques of mask work in lessons. Harlequin Monologue Harlequino enters. A table is in the middle of the stage and on the table is a pie. A couple of beats pass until they notice it. Harlequino (con’t): I bet no one would notice if I just took one bite, would they? Nahhh. Just ONE though. [Dips a finger in the pie, scoops it up and eats it] mmmmm, delicious!!!! Maybe a bit more? No one would know, I could just replace it. [Goes to take another bite but instead picks it up] Aha! I’ll just take the whole thing. Sssshh. Ooo this will be nice [starts walking away while eating it but stumbles on a piece of paper. They pick it up, and start reading it aloud] Do not eat this, it’s for the party later, Pantalone. Oh no, oh no, oh no. He can’t know that I’ve done this. Errrm. People can be heard outside the room. Harlequin (con’t): Uhh ohhhh. I’d better go, but the pie. I don’t want to leave it. Unless I eat the evidence then no one would suspect a thing. Haha. [Finishes pie] [Shrugs] They can make another. Harlequino: Oooo hahaha, look at this. Harlequino edges closer to it curiously.
My world and thoughts – A commedia Monologue My name is Zanni, I’m the end of your very existence, I’m the end of the line, the weak, the runt. This world is new to me so I don’t know much about it, I know the world is full of things that I do not understand of yet. The world is full of beautiful colours like coral pink and violet, but there are some colours new, a colour like a roses thorns prickling at the skin and darkness like sorrow and pain, it swallows you up and hides you forever. Light brings darkness gifts and darkness keeps them. The world is new to me and there is so much to learn, to breath, to taste, to feel, to bleed. I have much to learn and little time. Recently I have learnt of
emotions, the love for another, the sorrow for the dead, the pain for the blood, the happiness for someone dear to you. There are tears that flow for lust and love, and sometimes we don’t know why. This world isn’t just your world, it’s mine too.

During the lockdown, all Year 8 classes completed a taster unit for their iMedia work. This was to produce a movie DVD. This unit gave students a chance to find out more about one of our ICT GCSE options we provide. In the second half of the term we started the logic unit, which is part of our computer science curriculum. Year 7 started the term studying hardware with an end of unit assessment. Congratulations to our top students from each class. They are now studying the iMedia unit to produce a movie poster.
Year 10 are continuing on with the second controlled assessment. They have been practicing their website skills ready to begin making their promotional website about Southampton. Year 9 have started their first assessment which will involve designing a sci-fi book cover, they are continuing with their research into this topic. After school intervention for Year 11 takes place on Tuesday and Thursday after school in room 5. Cyber Ambassadors Well done to the following students on becoming our ‘Cyber Ambassadors’, training and certificate from Hampshire police will take place in the summer term.
Computer Science – KS4 Year 11 are continuing with their mini assessments for each unit with an end of Unit 1 assessment taking place Tuesday 30th March and Unit 2 on Tuesday 18th May. All these assessments will support their centre assessed grades. Year 9 and 10 started to study new topics in school after some revision during the lockdown. Mini assessments took place during the lockdown as well, to support their teachers’ knowledge of how well they understood these topics.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
Humanities History & Geography
Team Humanities at Regents Park has been busy this term! We have been blown away by the student’s hard work, attitude and perseverance to their online learning during lockdown. As a result, we created our ‘Lockdown Legends’ certificates to hand out to those students who went above and beyond with their learning and the picture on the right is just a tiny snippet of the students who received these for their efforts. Something that has helped with all of our wellbeing is the return of the weekly department quiz! This was a staple for us in the first lockdown and was resurrected as a way to bring us together to have some fun. It was great to have a weekly catch up with the department doing something enjoyable and competitive - especially between Mrs Blake and Mrs O’Brien! And finally we would like to welcome Mr Sadler who has joined our team and is readily embracing the Regents Park spirit and ethos.
Religious Education This term saw the RE Department celebrating the power of parables with a Year 9 competition to reimagine perhaps the most famous of them all - the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The overall winner was Felix. Runners up were Olly, Oliwia & Robbie. In addition, there were some highly commended entries from Alex, Iman, Oscar, Mariella, Freya, Puja & Czhelsea. During an extravaganza of live lessons during lockdown, the RE department developed exciting collaborative practices that really drew on the strengths of the whole team and gave students a rich insight into a wealth of different approaches and the power of socratic dialogue. This approach is something that the department will be exploring more in the future. In other news, it seems that some exciting CPD opportunities await the RE department within the realms of philosophy for children. This will help us develop the more philosophical elements of our curriculum and open up possibilities for tackling the deepest preoccupations of the human soul!

Physical Education DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
PE’s recommended read:
I hope when reading this you and your families are in good health. We continue to adapt to the ever- changing challenges we face with real determination and resilience in the PE department! Students have approached and engaged in online lessons and shown a real interest to learn and adapt to different ways of learning. During difficult times, it is so important to ensure we are as active as possible - within Government guidelines of course! The positive impact this can have on our physical and mental wellbeing can really support us during these challenging times. Since Christmas, we have launched a variety of different competitions / challenges aimed at students to achieve their personal best. Where opportunities arose, we listened to feedback and have tried to turn these activities into dynamic family events. After a fantastic effort from both staff, students and their families, we managed to travel a combined 3117.07km. What an impressive total after 8 days of hard work! Staff and families = 1412.91km Students and families = 704.16KM Congratulations and thank you to everyone that took part. A special mention to Holly and her
family who managed a staggering 217km over the 8 days! We received a number of fantastic entries to our dance competition. It was great to see so many students push themselves out of their comfort zone – that’s when we really grow and develop! Our head judge has reviewed the entries and said it was an incredibly hard choice to decide the top 3. However, the results are in: KS3 1 - Sophie 2 - Alana 3 - Simran KS4 1 - Alisa 2 - Erin 3 - Mia Overall 1 - Alisa 2 - Erian 3 - Sophie On Wednesday 9th December 2020, over 50 BTEC sport students took their external exam. 80% attended additional revision sessions regularly and we’re pleased to report it paid off! Well done all!
Upon return to school, please can we remind students that they should only be wearing Regents Park PE kit on days they have core PE lessons or practical BTEC sport lessons. Please can you ensure students are not wearing hooded jumpers as this can cause harm to themselves and other students. They are permitted to wear the Regents Park PE jumper or a plain blue or black jumper that doesn’t have a hood. Please check your child’s timetable to ensure they are adhering to school rules. Many thanks for your support. The PE team wish you a restful and safe Easter break. We are really looking forward to welcoming you back to after school clubs and fixtures, when the situation allows us to.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Languages
Welcome to Miss Appadoo!
MFL Goes Online! Although the MFL team were at first quite nervous to move lessons online, by the end of January we were flying! Students enjoyed using existing resources such as LanguageNut and Google Classroom, however the most fun was definitely had on Blooket! We are now looking forward to seeing how we can incorporate this into the ‘normal’ classroom. A reminder that students are still able to access LanguageNut at home and on their mobile phones. Year 7 Positivity Potion Year 7 students enjoyed their first lesson back, firstly looking at the ingredients of this ‘Positivity Potion’ and then creating their own!
After February half-term, we had the great pleasure of introducing Miss Appadoo to our students! Miss Appadoo is a Teach First Academic Mentor who will be supporting our students with their language learning. We are extremely lucky to have her join our department and I know students are very excited to start having intervention sessions!
Los Animales
During Year 7s study of ‘Los Animales’, they were tasked with creating their own lost poster for an exotic animal. Miss Kingswell was certainly much happier to be using Google Images instead of trying to draw on the whiteboard!
Some Fantastic Lockdown Work
As part of Year 9s study of school life, they were asked to create their own daily routine comic book strip.
