MODEL LETTER
May 2021 Dear Parent,
Firstly, I hope that you and your family are well during these challenging times. I would also like to thank you for your support in your child’s language learning inside the classroom and during the online learning period. The department continue to be impressed with Year 9’s sensible approach to learning and the fantastic work they are producing. I am writing to let you know the MFL department has recognised your child as an Able Linguist. Their hard work and commitment to studying a language during the past three years has demonstrated their potential to succeed at GCSE. Therefore, we are recommending that your son/daughter continue this work onto GCSE in Year 10. Studying a language has a wide array of benefits. Obviously, the ability to communicate in a second (or third) language greatly opens up employment and travel opportunities across the world. However, a GCSE in a language by no means limits students to a career in teaching, translation or interpretation. It can actually give an advantage to many jobs in an increasingly global jobs market. The GCSE specification also gives us the opportunity to study and appreciate a variety of international literature, art and music, which allows students to build upon their existing cultural capital. At Regents Park, we are greatly committed to providing excellent teaching to our language students and this has been essential to our previously strong results in GCSE French and Spanish. If you do not want your child to continue studying a language at GCSE, it is essential that you contact the school via email (info@regentspark.southampton.sch.uk), as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to get into contact with me, if you have any further questions. Yours faithfully
