Eco-Adventurer Visit What do you like to do on a Sunday? Well Julien Moreau, our guest who came in to deliver a conference to our Year 10 geography students on Monday 20th November had caught a ferry from France to Portsmouth, ran over 21 miles from the port to our school, and pitched a tent for the night! This was all to promote ‘eco-schools’ – a programme of raising environmental awareness and improving school environments. Students were also able to find out the different routes that taking geography can lead them on, not to mention eco-adventuring! As mentioned this has been a very long term and I would like to thank staff, students and parents for their support. The community donations to our Trolley Appeal never ceases to amaze me and show what a caring and generous community we live in. I wish all staff, students and their families a very restful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes, Jonty Archibald Headteacher @regentsparkhead all aspects of students learning. GENERAL NEWS Beyond Recall Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 were lucky enough to take part in an exciting PSHE workshop whereby each year group enjoyed a performance by rock band Beyond Recall! As part of the show, students were treated to a mixture of well-known hits and also a few songs of their own, however there was also a serious side to the session. The artists delivered advice on how to stay safe online, as well as discussing cyber bullying and where to go for help. The band drew from personal experience and this appeared to resonate with our students who listened and got involved in the dialogue. They went away empowered with the knowledge of how to deal safely with their social media lives and beyond. Welcome to the winter 2017 edition of the Regents Review As we move into our last week of 2017, I can reflect on such a busy, successful and long term. Busy, as we welcomed our largest year group to Regents Park for a number of years. We took additional first choice students and I am pleased to say we are again oversubscribed for September 2018. It has been a tremendously successful term as our GCSE summer results put the school in the ‘Well Above’ category on the Department of Education performance tables. This places the school in the top 10% of all schools - again and in the top 3 schools in Hampshire and Southampton – again . What I find most heart-warming is that on top of academic and progress success the school has also achieved the prestigious Artsmark Gold award, which indicates that we are committed to

Charity Fund Raising The senior Student Leadership team have been busy raising funds for our nominated charities and have raised:

Fete 2018 Building on the success of last year’s summer fete we are beginning to organise 2018! If you would like to be involved by either donating prizes for our raffle or are a local business that would like to run a stall or just volunteer your services, please contact Mrs Freeman at the school. Armistice Day At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month - the day which marks the end of the First World War, staff and students observed the two minute silence. Once again, Mr Barron played the ‘Last Post’ to mark the occasion. A group of students came to the school dressed in their Cadet uniforms and took on the role of selling poppies throughout the day to support ‘The Royal British Legion’.

Salvation Army Visit Mr Barron ran a music recital evening with his GCSE music students on December 14th and members of the local Salvation Army attended. They listened to festive music and songs whilst tucking into mince pies and cups of tea. Children In Need I am pleased to tell you that we raised an amazing £693.58 for Children in Need on our non uniform day. A special well done to Jess Leonard who raised £16.08 busking.

Shopping Trolley Once again the school organised the ‘Christmas Shopping Trolley’ appeal and we gathered a huge amount of food and goodies for our local community to make sure everyone had an enjoyable time over the holidays.

Year 7 It only seems like yesterday that we welcomed our new Year 7 cohort to RPCC, but now we have finished our first term! Year 7 have absolutely proven themselves to be the biggest and best year group in RPCC. Year 7 have achieved a massive 17,445 achievement points between them, which is over 5,000 more than any other year group and included in that 141 pupils have already achieved their Bronze Award for receiving over 100 House points. Year 7 have made a fantastic transition into secondary school and are impeccably behaved around school and in lessons, this shows within the behaviour point data as Year 7 have 117 pupils out of 173 that haven’t had any behaviour points this year at all! Year 7 have shown great resilience and enthusiasm towards their school life, they have remained the best year group in relation to RPCC’s attendance figures, and still have 94 students out of 173 that are still on 100% attendance. Well done to all the pupils who have not missed a day of school this term! In this term, Year 7 have had their first opportunity for a school trip with the History department to London. The pupils who went on this trip did RPCC proud by being exceptionally well behaved and really showed that they can conduct themselves responsibly even in the excitement of being in the capital city. We have had plenty of Year 7’s attending clubs after school, this shows the enthusiasm and love of learning that Year 7 have. I must congratulate our Year 7 boys football team who have won all of their games this term and may our winning streaks continue! I hope to see Year 7’s continuing to attend more after school clubs in January. I have really enjoyed my first term at RPCC with our Year 7 team (pupils, tutors and staff attached to Year 7) everyone has worked very hard and deserves a well-earned rest this Christmas. I wish you all a very merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing everyone back in January, ready and raring to continue being the biggest and the best year group

Year 8 We are now nearing the end of the first term as Year 8 and it has been a thoroughly enjoyable ride so far. I have greatly enjoyed my first term as Year 8 Head of Year and have quickly the seen the wide range of qualities across the year group. I look forward to overseeing the progress of an exciting year group who have the potential to be one of the best year groups the school has seen. The Year 8 students have had plenty of opportunities to showcase their talents and potential over the term. We have had opportunities such as the Belgium Trip, representing school sports teams, an RE trip to Richard Tauntons College and a celebration of MFL based around immigration and Migrants. The students have represented the school and themselves brilliantly in all these exciting opportunities and have been a great credit to RPCC. I urge all students to participate in these opportunities as it can educate students in a different way which will support their classroom learning. The year group have proven themselves to have a wide range of talents and I have greatly enjoyed getting to know students and look forward to continuing our journey together. Regents Park has had another successful season playing rugby. Years 7, 8 & 9 have competed in various local tournaments against Hampshire and Southampton schools. Although Regents Park is not blessed with acres of grass to play rugby, it is encouraging to see a number of students wanting to jump into the school minibus and train and compete at Millbrook Rugby Club. Through positive experiences a number of students have signed to play for local clubs including Millbrook and Tottonians. There will be more opportunities to train and compete for Years 7, 8 & 9 in the New Year. If you have never tried rugby, I would urge you to give it a go, it is a great social sport too. Students all seem to enjoy the food and drink after games served up in the warm, dry club house at Millbrook Rugby Club. For more details, please see Mr Sinclair

It is great to see that even after students are dismissed at the end of the day, you can still see lots of Year 9 students about the school getting involved in extracurricular events / clubs. This is particularly evident with Rock Challenge rehearsals as I am blessed with such a talented year group in music and dance. I would like to encourage all students to get involved in clubs after school, there is something for everyone to get involved in. I would like to wish all students in Year 9 a restful Christmas holiday, you all deserve it. I really look forward to pushing on with your progress in the New Year. Mr Sinclair Head of Year 9

really well this year and feedback students have given me tells me they are enjoying their option subjects. This feedback goes to reinforce the decision to move away from 3 year Key Stage 3 to a 3 year KS4. Initial teacher reports indicate Year 9 is doing well in terms of progress which I am very proud of. Although It is early days, it is reassuring that teachers feel in the main Year 9 are on track to meet or exceed their targets. The challenge is to keep this level of commitment going throughout Year 9, 10 and 11. I am confident that Year 9 students will rise to this challenge and in doing so leave Regents Park Community College with good grades.

Year 10 WOW - I can’t believe it’s that time of year again! Christmas has once again snuck up on us. Year 10 have had a fabulous term this term. Our new College Council is well under way with our new representatives, Gary Hearn and Ethan Evans. There have been huge improvements in the canteen through ideas from College Council. College Council have also supported new teachers and monitored behaviour throughout Year 10. Year 10 have started their new courses and are continuing to enjoy PE within the curriculum. They are enjoying having opportunities to learn in different ways, especially within science and geography. There have been many school trips available to them, including the Richard Taunton’s Dance trip on the 21st November. focused on their work experience, as well as opportunities given to them from Bond Dickinson. Over 50% of students managed to hand in their forms and find their own work experience. Year 10 continue to amaze me with their passion and enthusiasm for learning and life. We continue to find new ideas and initiatives to support their learning such as Morocco 2019. I would like to wish you a happy, healthy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you in 2018!

This year the Year 10 students have matured quite a lot. In lessons we are trusted to learn independently for our benefit. We are especially loving photography with all our projects being challenging, in science the experiments have been very interesting with Mr Ashworth doing a methane bubble experiment - let’s just say that was very explosive! In geography we had an eco-adventurer come and tell us how we can save the ocean and improving the world by recycling. He also showed us his accomplishment which was to swim to Jersey from La Motte. He was the first person to achieve this 5km swim.

Year 11 Year 11 had an amazing start to the year with a trip to Thorpe Park. The park was quiet and the sun shone so everyone managed to get on all the rides they wanted to go on. Even the teachers were taken on a few rollercoasters that they were not expecting to do that day! They set a fantastic example to other young people in the park and represented the school extremely well. Happily, Year 11 have made a great transition from Year 10. They have been working really hard in lessons to continue the excellent groundwork they made in the early stages of their Key Stage 4 courses. They are maintaining a positive approach to their studies and many are looking for opportunities to take on extra revision classes as they head into their mock exams. It’s been fantastic to see the year group led by their Senior Prefect Team and I’d like to thank Toby Norton, Mollie Knight and the rest of the team on their work that they have done so far and the input that they have had to the running of the school. It’s also exciting to announce that the Regents Park Prom is now confirmed for Thursday 28th June 2018 at the McDonald Botley Park Hotel, an excellent choice of venue. There is a positive mood amongst the cohort and an expectation that they will do really well this year. With excellent results for the last two years we are all hoping to build on our successes and looking forward to an even better set of results in September 2018. Mr Holloway Head of Year 11

New Additions I would like to extend a welcome to our new student librarians who have joined us this year! Olivia Bearfield, Lisa Williams, Alex Ballard, Ernie Penney, Cameron Foley, Chloe Turner, Erin Maddock, Alisa Filippova, Martin Leckenby, Bailie Wyatt, David Calin, Kareena Kaur, Emily Goard and Grace Hacker are all fitting in well and have been a joy to get to know. If any of you reading this would like to be involved more with the library please ask as there is a waiting list in place for new positions as they occur. Thank you as always to the diligent student librarians who have returned to their post this year and helped with the interview process for the new library squad. Abbie Alexander, Aaron Lacey, Zoe Swift, Hannah McArthur, Annalise Foley, Rachel Scott-Denness and Zaynah Bibi are part of what makes the library at Regents Park so vibrant and wonderful. I do hope you continue for as long as possible with your duties. Hannah McArthur deserves a special mention for taking on duties as senior student librarian and training our newbies so well at the beginning of last term.

Saints Project A group of Year 8 students were lucky enough to be selected to take part in the Saints Enterprise Project, involving a launch event at the stadium. The purpose of this project is to: build confidence; promote leadership skills and develop effective teamwork. Our group has certainly thrown themselves into the project. They are involved in weekly sessions with a member of the Saints Foundation who comes into school to deliver to the group. Upon completion, the students will return to the stadium to compete against other schools. Dominic Masters, a Year 8 student, said: ‘this programme has taught me to explore finances and how to use money carefully. It has helped me with maths and English. Aliyah Draper added: ‘I’ve learned lots and have enjoyed taking part in the project.’

Key Stage 3 English Transition Project Our new Year 7 students have settled into their learning beautifully and earlier in the term they took part in a transition project; this saw them writing letters to their primary school teachers. Much to their delight, we’ve had lots of replies from their previous teachers and they’ve enjoyed having these read to them in their English lessons. Both Year 7 and Year 8 classes are currently studying a novel with titles such as: Cirque du Freak; Iqbal; The Other Side of Truth and Stone Cold. They’ve been exploring the context of the novels and the significance of this. Word of the Week ‘Word of the week’ is in its second year at RPCC now and the students enjoy nominating exciting words for inclusion in this. Recent words have included: ‘europhic’, ‘preposterous’ and ‘erratic’. Can you and your child think of any interesting words that could feature as a future word of the week? If so, please ask your child to speak to Mrs Ukahi in room 10.

A book in every bag… The English Department continues to promote reading across the school and we endorse the idea of every student having a book in their bags at all times. Year 7 and 8 have weekly reading lessons and there are lots of opportunities for them to visit the library to choose books from the wide range on offer. Regents Reads! Do you? ‘Student of the Fortnight’ In the English Department we routinely celebrate excellent effort and attitude towards learning. In addition to other rewards, a student of the fortnight is nominated by each class teacher. This is displayed on the English corridor as part of our ‘Student of the Fortnight’ winners’ display and students also receive a certificate to place in their rewards folder. for her hard work in the English department and wish her lots of luck in her new role. We’ve also said goodbye to Miss Woolhouse who has left us to pursue other avenues – including keeping bees. She will also be missed by staff and students. Welcome... DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Mathematics Innovative Teaching Week In November, the mathematics department took part in innovative teaching week along with all subject areas of the school. As part of this week Year 8 focused on deep end instructions. One question asked was ‘how much maths can you get from looking at a tube of Smarties?’ Students were given a tube of Smarties and a piece of paper. Students worked independently and creatively to answer questions, coming up with lots of different ways to apply their maths skills to Smarties.

Pi Club After the Christmas break Year 11 students will have the opportunity to attend mathematics breakfast revision sessions, fondly known as Pi Club, during the spring term. This will help them to prepare for their Pre Public maths exams in March as well as the lead up to their GCSEs in the summer of 2018. Students can come along to room 32 from 7.50am on Thursday mornings to benefit from this extra help but should also be revising independently at regular intervals at home, reviewing an array of topics covered over the past four years with particular attention given to those highlighted in the recent mock examinations as an area of weakness. Each student will be receiving an individual feedback sheet based on their performance in the mock examinations to indicate areas of strength and weakness. Students can then use resources available on and downloadable from the student drive as well as purchase revision guides and/or the Practice Papers Plus book from the school office (priced at £2.50).

Numeracy Ninjas This is an initiative which was introduced last year and one which we have implemented to help improve students’ basic skills. Students in Year 7 have really enjoyed tackling Numeracy Ninjas as their daily starter and are keen to see which belt they have achieved. Each year the GCSE examiner’s report highlights the impact of poor basic skills in leading to errors and we feel that the work we are doing, coupled with students’ own independent work to improve their times tables, multiplication and division, will be key in enabling students to make good progress in mathematics and, consequently, enable them to face the challenges of the new GCSE with increased confidence. Students in Year 8 now have a weekly Numeracy Ninjas lesson within their tutor time to continue their hard work from Year 7 on Numeracy Ninjas and it will be interesting to see the impact of this work within their maths lessons. This term we are celebrating the following students from 7BZ and 7GZ who have been working really hard on their Ninjas and have been improving week on week.

Science Year 11 updates Year 11 students have been working really hard in preparation for their forth coming mock exams, and ultimately their summer GCSE examinations. It has been brilliant to see so many students making the extra effort to attend Wednesday morning and after school revision on Thursdays. Mr Moth and Mr Grainey would also like to thank all the parents who attended the GCSE information evening and encourage all Year 11 students to make the most of the revision resources they have on the USB sticks. BAE Systems visit Twenty girls from Year 8 took part in an interactive work shop run by an all-female team of engineers from BAE system. The students found out about careers relating to science and other STEM subjects. They also had the opportunity to undertake a personality questionnaire. The “People like me” questionnaire It has been a really hands on experience for students in Year 7 and 8. They have been getting used to using all the hand tools and machine to create different projects, developing their confidence and skill at the same time. Year 7 have been creating candle holders to take home using recycled woods and acrylics. Year 8s attention has been focussed on developing pinball style games, experimenting with mechanisms and other game elements. Friday after school is the time set aside for after school activities in the workshop, my group of students have been creating decorative boxes using handmade wood joints. This project will be finished before Christmas and we will be starting a new one in January, all are welcome to come along 2.50-4pm.

ICT – KS4 Year 11 have been working hard on their controlled assessments in class ready to start their 3rd and final one soon. In preparation for their next unit which is a short video to promote Southampton, we were able provide the opportunity for all students to take their own copyright free photos in the city centre. Our classes were a great credit to the school and have taken excellent ranges of photos and short videos that will support their learning. After school intervention still takes place on a Tuesday and Wednesday in rooms 21/22 and students who need to catch up or complete work should be attending then. Year 9 and 10 have started well on their GCSE CIDA (Certificate in Digital Applications) courses, looking at their website skills in different situations, applying advanced shows young women how the skills that they possess are applicable to jobs in science, technology, engineering and maths. Homework and revision guides Students in KS4 (Years 9, 10 and 11) have been eagerly working though their revision guides each week as part of the science department’s homework plan. Each week the homework links to the content being covered by students in lessons. Revision guides can still be ordered - a letter can be obtained by speaking to Mr. Moth. New staff Several new staff have joined the science department this academic year. Miss A Cooper, Miss Partridge and Miss Wilding have all joined the team of teachers within the department, and Mrs O’Donoghue has joined our team of technicians.

ICT – KS3 Our new Year 7 groups have been exploring both the hardware and software that a computer uses, specifically the components and peripherals that make them up and how they are classified. They are now using a range of skills with software creating different office based tasks. Year 8 have developed their knowledge from last year about the hardware in a computer and make decisions about how to construct an appropriate computer, how much ram, what processor speed etc. They are now making progress with their coding skills developing retro style games that other people can play. KS4 homework and revision - join Mr Moth and Mrs Griffiths for breakfast revision at the science department’s morning session. Bring all the questions that you need clarification with and we can explain them to you over a hot chocolate and pastry; come join us every Wednesday at 7.45 in S4. Not a morning person? Mr Grainey’s Thursday after school session is the place to go to get all your homework and revision needs covered. Year 7 and 8 students can join Miss Groves, Miss Partridge and Miss Wilding in S5 for STEM club every Wednesday after school. Experiments include making marshmallow catapults, erupting Mentos and coke volcanos and all that lies in between! If you are in Year 7 or 8 and have an interest in science, then this is a must!

On Tuesday 12th September we held our third Football Enrichment Day. The day was fully attended and the students had a fantastic day. This day is designed to help prepare our students for participation in the Southampton Schools’ Football League. The day comprised of practice drills to introduce and develop key skills necessary for successful play; workshops to develop understanding of key rules, strategies and tactics, and a tournament. All ably assisted by our PE Champions. As a result, we have had a fantastic start to the football season. Year 7 have won all their league games and are top of the league. They also beat Oasis Mayfield, Bitterne, Wildern and Woodlands to win their qualifying group for a National 5 a-side tournament. In the finals we comfortably beat Upper Shirley High but unfortunately lost 3-2 to Wildern (who we had beaten in the previous round and consisted of 3 academy players) in the final. All the team should be proud and we look forward to the remaining fixtures in February.

Years 8 and 9 have also had an excellent start to the season. Year 8 are currently second in the league just behind Cantell and Year 9 are third. We look forward to seeing if we can close the gap when fixtures recommence. We are thrilled to see over 200 students regularly taking part in extra-curricular clubs this year, including swimming, football, rugby, basketball, fitness and Rock Challenge. Our new team of PE Champions (shown below) have been instrumental in providing students with a positive and motivating experience at all after school and lunch time clubs. The success of girl’s football means that we will be competing in our first tournament of the year after Christmas. The PE Champions host their first event of the year on Wednesday 13th December which will see all Year 7, 8 and 9 students compete for their tutor groups in a dodgeball, water polo and table tennis tournament. DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Sociology

‘I am really enjoying this course because it helps with my aspirations to be a social worker.

Looking forward in the course, we would suggest that current Sociology students are continuing to extend their learning outside of the classroom through independent research using the wealth of resources online and within the school library. We are committed to rewarding the hard work and effort demonstrated by the students throughout the GCSE Sociology course and offer a number of rewards, including the ‘Student of the Week’ certificate. The names of the nominated students are displayed in classrooms, as well as receiving a certificate to place in the students’ rewards folder. Quotes from Year 9 students: ‘I love Sociology. For the 2017-2018 academic year, Regent Park Community College has introduced the challenging and engaging KS4 option of GCSE Sociology. This has proved a popular option choice for students, with both classes in Year 9 and Year 10 being full to capacity.

My favourite topic is ‘Crime and Deviance’ and also learning about famous murderers.’ - Caitlin Quotes from Year 10 students: ‘My favourite subject! It is very interesting because it makes you think about different roles in society and how it works. So far on the course, we have looked at the key works of Karl Marx and his views on Capitalism; as well as the Functionalist theorist Durkheim. Perhaps even more exciting, we have begun to study the ‘Crime and Deviance’ module of the specification, looking at famous murders and the 2011 London riots. Alongside this we have conducted surveys around the school, which have enabled us to better understand the ‘dark figure of crime’.

Rock Star Awards The Rock Star Awards were founded in 2012 by local recruitment solutions company, Rock Recruitment. Angela Piromalli is the managing director and host of the awards. Angela said, “ I am absolutely delighted to welcome Teachers Building Society to the Rock Star Awards team and to recognise the outstanding talented teachers that we have in our community who are directly European Day of Languages

influencing and supporting our young people’s future and ultimately our economy.” The Rock Star Awards celebrate the success of young people under the age of 26 in Dorset and this year there are a range of new categories - including Teaching Star of the Future, IT Star of the Future and Creative Star of the future. This year we had the pleasure and pride to enter Miss Kingswell.

Year 8 Celebration Day On Monday 13th November, Year 8 students were inspired and engaged by a variety of lessons on the theme of refugees and their contribution to our communities. They also had an assembly with a speaker from the City of Sanctuary charity. Art students created an amazing mural on the theme of peace. In mathematics, students looked at immigration and emigration statistics. In modern foreign languages, students analysed stories about the lives and journeys of two refugees (from Honduras and Syria). Those who had a music lesson on that day analysed styles of folk music influenced by various groups of people. A big “thank you” to all Curriculum Areas who were involved with this event.

European Day of Languages is celebrated on 26th September each year. This year we ran two competitions during the week of European Day of Languages. One competition was for our students to identify a message translated into many languages (European and non-European), these cards were placed around the school. The other competition involved members of staff greeting students in different languages. If their international message was heard by students, their name was put into a hat for a prize draw. Creative Arts DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Arts Mark Gold Award We are delighted to inform you that Regents Park Community College has been awarded an Artsmark Gold Award! The Artsmark Journey – Regents Park Community College.

a willing and positive staff, a hands-on governing body and students who relish new and creative opportunities. We now have established links with sixth form colleges, theatres and galleries in our local community and we work closely on projects that celebrate the art and culture in our city of Southampton. ‘Challenge, excitement, new experiences, and passion for the arts’ all count towards an enriched understanding of what you are capable of and this mantra plays a huge part at Regents Park Community College. We started our Journey in November 2015 and received our Gold Arts Mark in October 2017. Although it was a long road from the Statement of Commitment to the Case Study the process was fulfilling and positive. Until you really look at what you do with the ‘Arts’ in school you do not realise how creative your students and staff are. We are incredibly lucky at Regents Park to have Art GCSE Art with Southampton City Art Gallery This term saw our dedicated GCSE Art students spend some of their well-earned half term break furthering their artistic talents and interests with the ‘Make Your Mark’ workshop held at Southampton City Art Gallery. Working closely with artist Alistair Eales, our students practised a range of various drawing techniques, learned about how galleries are curated and run, and got to have an access all areas tour of their extensive archives – even seeing a genuine Michael Craig Martin painting, an artist they are studying closely at the moment.

Here’s what some of our pupils had to say about the experience: “We saw £200,000,000 worth of work in the vault – It was so fun!” – Cora Byrne, Year 10 “We did a variety of Art activities with charcoal to music, developing our drawing skills. All of this is going towards an Art award and I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.” – Konur Bilgic, Year 10. “We got to learn and investigate about famous artists and got to see a Michael Craig Martin original painting which was super cool! I really enjoyed it.” – Yaz Simmons, Year 10.

Year 8 Textiles We have had an excellent start to the year in textiles. Students have been creating vibrant and lively cushion covers inspired by the work of the artist Romero Britto. The quality of the work has been outstanding and students have enjoyed learning the skills of Batik and tie dye.

Humanities

Hampton Court On Wednesday 18th October a group of over 50 students and 5 staff travelled to Richmond-upon- Thames to take in the spectacular Tudor Palace of Hampton Court. It was fascinating to explore Henry VIII’s stomping ground; students were able to sit down at the top table in his Great Hall, take in the intricate tapestries and original paintings and stroll through Anne Boleyn’s Gate. In order to further enrich their study of the period and their historical skills, the students also took part in an ‘Applying History’ hands-on session. They investigated primary sources including historic artefacts such as coins and archaeological material, as well as documentary sources to analyse how we know about the past, and to question to what extent this evidence can be trusted. Students participated enthusiastically and as a result we hope we have some future historians in our midst!

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Battlefields Trip On Friday 17th November we took 46 Year 8 students to the Battlefields in Ypres, Belgium. It was a very early start - 5:30am and a long day but the students had a fabulous experience. Our first stop was Essex Farm cemetery, the site of the grave of the youngest solider to be killed. He was just 15 years old. Then we moved onto the trenches! Students got to see how cramped conditions were and how badly they flooded! We walked through and you could feel the eeriness of what the soldiers experienced! Then our final destination on our tour was the Tyne Cot cemetery. This was particularly poignant as all the remembrance wreaths were still in place. Students had real sense of the enormity of the loss of life when they read the names on the stone tablets and started to count the number of graves.

In the evening, we had the privilege of seeing the Menin Gate by night. Some students even found some soldiers that shared the same names as them. This was a wonderful experience and the students all respected the occasion. After a visit to the chocolate shop, a group of tired students and staff headed home feeling lucky to have experienced the day and feeling grateful to those who served and died for us. “I really enjoyed the History Trip to Belgium, it was brilliant fun and educational! Visiting the graves of the people from the war was a great experience. The museum was fascinating because we looked at the uniforms, guns and equipment which was really cool! I also really liked the chocolate shop as they chocolate tasted good! Overall the trip was one of my favourites ever.” Hassan Khalil - Year 8

Geography On 31st October, classes were treated to a special ‘Geography of Halloween Day’. This compromised of finding ghosts around school using grid references and learning how different countries celebrate Halloween around the world. For example, did you know that in the UK Halloween used to be celebrated by carving beetroots not pumpkins! Future Geography events to look out for: • The Great Geography Bake Off open to all year groups • Year 10 trip to Portsmouth. Ask your geography teacher for a letter • Year 11 revision every Wednesday in Room 24
