The Regents Review Winter 2018

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Humanities WW1 Centenary Celebrations On Monday 12th November Regents Park celebrated the Centenary of the end of the conflict in Europe. We had a day where students had a focus on the War throughout their different lessons.

Year 7 enjoyed researching local heroes and made a memorial grave yard to honour the fallen heroes of Southampton.

The history department was proud to lead on a day of celebration and students felt very strongly that the messages of remembrance be displayed and heard around the school. As a result, we created a collage of remembrance and made paper plate poppies to show the heartfelt messages of the students at Regents Park.

In Science students did work on the creation of chlorine gas and linked this to the poem ‘Dolce et Decorum Est’. The students were excited by what they learned and were keen to share this experience with their history teachers. The poems produced from this learning were amazing! The creative arts department excelled themselves this year with a brilliant production of the WW1 themed ‘Oh, What A Lovely War’. Authentic costumes, set and music added to the feeling of being transported back to the summer of 1914. The art and photography installation captured the emotion of the time well. A silhouetted soldier against a backdrop of poppies was a moving tribute to the fallen heroes.

The English and sociology departments also dedicated time to the theme of the day and focused on the purpose of war as well as the idea of remembrance. Again some excellent work was produced by these departments.
