DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
Year 8 Art During this term, Year 8 students have explored how artists use visual language to communicate ideas and emotions. They studied the protest art of Bob and Roberta Smith, investigating how bold text, colour and imagery can be used to convey messages and inspire change. Students then created their own motivational artworks in response to this work, developing their skills in composition, typography, and personal expression. More recently, they have explored the artwork of Vincent van Gogh, examining how colour can be used to represent mood and emotion. Through a range of practical activities, students have developed their understanding of colour theory while experimenting with expressive mark-making and painting techniques.
Year 9 Art During this term, Year 9 students have explored the work of Giacomo Costa, focusing on his dramatic depictions of futuristic mega-cities. Inspired by his work, students investigated themes of urban environments, architecture and scale, creating imaginative collages, drawings and paintings. Using famous landmarks and buildings found in Southampton as source material, they combined observational and creative techniques to develop unique cityscape compositions. Throughout the project, students have refined their skills in composition, perspective, mixed media and visual storytelling, while exploring how artists can transform familiar places into imaginative new worlds.
