The Regents Review Summer 2024
DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Languages RPCC is off to Tenerife! The trip to Tenerife is now full and we will be departing there from the 24th - 28th March 2025! Both the MFL and Geography departments are raring to go! There will be a parent information evening in January 2025 for all attending students - but do not hesitate to email or call Mrs Northfield or Miss Gilbert Twigg, if you have any further questions. Community Languages The MFL department are looking for all speakers of Polish, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Punjabi, Turkish, Italian, Farsi, Chinese, Urdu, Portuguese, Japanese, Persian and Russian who are currently in Years 9 and 10. If students haven’t already done so, RPCC can enter a student for a bonus GCSE in their home language in June 2025. Although we may not be able to help with the language itself, the MFL department can support with essential exam skill and practice – we even have a dedicated Google Classroom, where past papers and other useful tips can be found. Students can see Mrs Northfield if this is something that interests them. We cannot enter a child for the GCSE without the parent’s permission. Innovative Teaching Week As part of Innovative Teaching Week, our Year 9 students had the opportunity to apply their language skills within a cyber security context. After learning about the role of a language analyst at the GCHQ. Students then deciphered some encrypted messages to discover the threat. Students were surprised at how far their language took them, and how essential cultural knowledge is when understanding a language.
Languagenut The MFL department continue to be impressed with students’ effort on our online learning platform Languagenut. Below you will see the school leaderboard. Remember Languagenut is a great resource to keep your languages fresh over the summer break. Your usernames and passwords can found on your Google Classroom.
Customs and Festivals As part of our Year 8 curriculum focus on customs and festivals, our students have the opportunity to take a closer look at customs and festivals in the Spanish and French speaking world. Our Spanish students, really enjoyed learning the origins of the bizarre baby jumping festival - some even had a go at being the colacho themselves! revision over the summer break and speaking intervention will resume every Wednesday after school from September. Year 10 Mock Exams Well done to all Year 10 linguists on the completion of their first set of French and Spanish mock exams! Mrs Northfield and Mrs Okoroafor have been very impressed with your resilience! Remember to keep up a little vocabulary
