The Regents Review Spring 2022

GENERAL NEWS

Year 8 PSHE Day Year 8s PSHE day took place in March, Mr Sinclair was able to go around each of the sessions to see the great questions that students were asking, the 6 topics covered were: • The risks and dangers associated with arson, led by education colleagues from Hampshire Fire and Rescue service. • A brilliant session led by our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mr Strange covering safeguarding and online risks. • Session with Solent Mind covering mental health and wellbeing. • Session with Yellow Door introducing the concept of what makes a dangerous relationship. • Session to develop their understanding of what forced marriage and honour-based violence are. • An amazing smoking & alcohol session led by Mr Timmis from our science department.

Year 9 PSHE Day

Year 9 had a real good opportunity to engage in relevant sessions as part of our PSHE Day back in January. They rotated around the following 6 sessions during the day.

• An introduction to first aid and how to perform CPR led by our amazing Mr Stone.

• A healthy eating session led by our staff. • Session with Solent Mind covering mental health and wellbeing. • Session with Yellow Door covering the topic of dangerous relationships and consent. • Session to develop their understanding of what forced marriage and honour-based violence are. • Drugs & alcohol session with staff from No Limits. Miss Robinson led assemblies for our female students looking at ambitious women and resilience, followed by the menstrual cycle and body image. This allowed girls to push their aspirations further, linking back to the “This Girl Can” campaign in PE. It also gave the opportunity to develop their understanding about the menstrual cycle, the fact that it can start at different points in their lives, and why exercise is important during this time, along with when a period may be abnormal in it’s cycle and when they may need to seek medical advice. Regarding body image, it was more about normalising all types of body image, promoting body confidence over body shaming. Again, more information will go out on this so that all students are aware of these topics regardless of their gender.

Gender Targeted Assemblies

At the end of March, we had the group ‘Beyond Equality’ deliver virtual assemblies with a Q&A afterwards to male students from Year 8-11 in place of their regular assembly that week. The topics covered revolved around what masculinity means to them, trying to challenge harmful stereotypes and encourage students to reflect on what kind of man they want to be and how they will go about treating others to be a good role model. There were some amazing questions asked by our students as part of this.
