The Regents Review Spring 2022
WELCOME
Headteacher’s Welcome
Being the Headteacher of Regents Park is a privilege and every day I learn more about our community and our history which is just fascinating. Our school name first appears in 1913 when the Infant School opened for the first time. A year later in 1914 the Secondary School opened its doors. We read in our RPCC archive that many years on in 1940 the school had to be evacuated and it was six years before we opened again as a renamed Regents Park Secondary Modern School for girls and boys, with the addition of an infant school. Now that we have been able to open our doors once again to the wider community it has been very special to have conversations with grandparents, uncles, aunties, sisters and friends in our community who once attended the school. I so enjoy learning about the school community and the sharing of memories. As you will see on our social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and our website) this month has seen us capture memories from the past including our current staff who were once students here! Visitors always comment on the wonderful warmth they feel when they walk around the school but they also comment on the eclectic mix of the traditional and the modern. Our bell tower still rises up proudly into the sky as you approach the school, the infant sign is still etched into the stone entrance, our Victorian doors creek as they open and our parquet flooring still shines in our main hall. Community is in our name, it is in the sole of the building it is our ethos and it is in our future. Our students are at the heart of what we do every day and we have truly missed seeing them experience the fully open RPCC offer over the pandemic. Thankfully those days have passed and now we enjoy seeing students back on stage singing and dancing, children in the pool learning
to swim and lifeguard, others attending to our school site improvement or looking after our allotment, visits from primary schools, sharing reading and mentoring, trampolining, football, art competitions, reward events, dance events, maths clubs, science revision, evening library events and so much more…. we truly have Bounced back. Our laptop lockers and ICT rooms allow our students to access the world beyond the building, our state-of-the-art science laboratories support the challenge of learning physics, shemistry and biology in a modern environment, our Design Hub offers students the opportunity to be creative in making tasty dishes in food technology and making birdboxes or puzzles from wood. Like every community we are always changing. Firstly, I want to thank our Head Ambassadors, Jack and Nicole, for working so hard to represent the student voice and as they get ready to sit their exams next term. They will be getting ready to pass the title and the responsibilities onto the next generation of student leaders. I also want to thank a few members of staff for being part of our community over the last few years as they move onto new challenges and promotions: Mr Odum who will be leaving the maths team to be a Curriculum Leader, Mr Timmis who will be leaving the science team to experience teaching Key Stage 5, Mrs Stanness Witcher who is extending her skills by returning to study, Mrs O’Donoghue from our Technician team who is moving for a promotion in a bigger department and Miss Giles, our cleaning supervisor who will be joining the NHS. We are always so proud when we can share in the success of our staff and our recent recruitment process has meant that we will have some wonderful new staff joining our community who will take over these posts. Thank you for being part of our community, enjoy the Easter break and we look forward to sharing more community stories in the next Regents Review. Mrs Barnes Headteacher

GENERAL NEWS
Year 8 PSHE Day Year 8s PSHE day took place in March, Mr Sinclair was able to go around each of the sessions to see the great questions that students were asking, the 6 topics covered were: • The risks and dangers associated with arson, led by education colleagues from Hampshire Fire and Rescue service. • A brilliant session led by our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mr Strange covering safeguarding and online risks. • Session with Solent Mind covering mental health and wellbeing. • Session with Yellow Door introducing the concept of what makes a dangerous relationship. • Session to develop their understanding of what forced marriage and honour-based violence are. • An amazing smoking & alcohol session led by Mr Timmis from our science department.
Year 9 PSHE Day
Year 9 had a real good opportunity to engage in relevant sessions as part of our PSHE Day back in January. They rotated around the following 6 sessions during the day.
• An introduction to first aid and how to perform CPR led by our amazing Mr Stone.
• A healthy eating session led by our staff. • Session with Solent Mind covering mental health and wellbeing. • Session with Yellow Door covering the topic of dangerous relationships and consent. • Session to develop their understanding of what forced marriage and honour-based violence are. • Drugs & alcohol session with staff from No Limits. Miss Robinson led assemblies for our female students looking at ambitious women and resilience, followed by the menstrual cycle and body image. This allowed girls to push their aspirations further, linking back to the “This Girl Can” campaign in PE. It also gave the opportunity to develop their understanding about the menstrual cycle, the fact that it can start at different points in their lives, and why exercise is important during this time, along with when a period may be abnormal in it’s cycle and when they may need to seek medical advice. Regarding body image, it was more about normalising all types of body image, promoting body confidence over body shaming. Again, more information will go out on this so that all students are aware of these topics regardless of their gender.
Gender Targeted Assemblies
At the end of March, we had the group ‘Beyond Equality’ deliver virtual assemblies with a Q&A afterwards to male students from Year 8-11 in place of their regular assembly that week. The topics covered revolved around what masculinity means to them, trying to challenge harmful stereotypes and encourage students to reflect on what kind of man they want to be and how they will go about treating others to be a good role model. There were some amazing questions asked by our students as part of this.

Year 11 Support The library has enjoyed hosting weekly Year 11 revision sessions run by the science department. We have been so impressed with the great attendance on a Friday afternoon by keen science students. In addition, the library has stayed open Tuesday evenings to host English, science and general revision sessions for students, again with key Regents Park teachers. As well as enjoying hot chocolate, it has been wonderful to see the commitment of students to getting the best results possible. Well done Year 11s!

This Girl Can As part of the ‘This Girl Can’ Intervention at Regents Park, Miss Robinson has been working with girls from Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10, to discuss their ambitions and strategies to overcome setbacks. There have been lots of open discussions and it has been great to see the year groups come together to support each other. Next week will see the girls develop their self-confidence further which will allow them to identify ways in which we can promote girls in sport and at Regents Park.
Top Tutoring Our Senior Leadership Team have been recognising ‘top tutoring’ within school! Congratulations to Miss Robinson who has recently been awarded with a top tutoring postcard.

GENERAL NEWS
Year 7 We are now two thirds of the way through Year 7 and I’m sure you will all agree that this year has gone extremely quickly. We are now concentrating on developing our work to show further progress in the build up to Year 8, where students will start to think about GCSE options. It has been a busy term for Year 7 with sporting fixtures and tournaments, PSHE days and an extremely successful Dance Live competition, where we won awards! Year 7 students have been fantastic through all of these events and have been a massive credit to themselves by showing focus, maturity and success across all areas. There are several excellent opportunities available to students at Regents Park and I urge all students to participate in as many of these opportunities as they can. I have great pride in overseeing the development of Year 7 and look forward to carrying on sharing the successes with Year 7 students in

Year 8 Year 8 options have dominated this term which has been exciting. This is the first opportunity for students to have a say into their education next year. It has been great speaking with students discussing their aspirations for Year 11 and post Regents Park. I was bowled over when a student explained they would like to work with nanotechnology within medicine. During the course of this term I am very proud of
the number of students who has appeared in the top of the achievement point charts each week. So far 49 students have received recognition for their efforts, some multiple times. Congratulations to the following students for being in the top 10 for this term: Luca, Izzy, Taisia, Samuel, Resham, Ava, Mya, Nathan and Jessica

Overall top 10 since September: Izzy, Jessica, Ava, Eleftheria, Resham, Luca, Lola, Mae and Ruby. I would like to wish all Year 8 students and parents a lovely Easter holiday. We all very much look forward to welcoming Year 8 back for their final term before moving on to Year 9! Mr Sinclair Head of Year 8
Year 9 We have past the mid-way point for Cohort 2019 this term, it is such a delight to see the year group maturing and really getting into the stride with their studies. At lunch time there is a buzz of discussions about their new options subjects, discussing sociological questions, how they are using their photos taken in photography, what they’ve learnt about a new sport etc.. Staff have been stopping the team in the corridors to praise the attitude and behaviour of Year 9. Year 9s have settled into their GCSE courses really well. They have shown enthusiasm, resilience and passion for the topics. Some excellent written work has supported this. Year 9 have had their first taste of the hall exams, which went very well. As a reward, students were given a non-uniform day on the 29th March.
We have started sending positive weekly letters home, as well as reducing low level behaviour within the year group by 67% this term. As always, myself and the team really appreciate the support you give the school. I’d like to congratulate the students on their achievements this year so far. Top achievement points across the year:

GENERAL NEWS
Year 10 Year 10 have had a very positive and productive term through into 2022. As their Head of Year, I have been incredibly impressed with their resilience and determination when approaching their chemistry mock exams. The attendance at revision sessions and extra support put in place from the science department has been well received. Recently Year 10 also attended an exams and revision workshop, delivered by The Learning Performance company. The workshop explored memory techniques to help students remember key information and a wide array of revision techniques to help support effective revision for upcoming exams. Students were very positive and mature throughout the day, and I received very positive feedback on the day itself.
The Year 10 football team have also had a fantastic season, as it comes to a close. With a number of wins against very difficult opposing schools and an incredible team ethos, the team have represented the values of Regents Park indefinitely. Mr Stone Head of Year 10

A few quick reminders from myself include the date for our prom – this is being held at the Macdonald Botley Park (Winchester Road, Botley, Southampton, SO32 2UA) on Thursday 30th June 2022. All payments for this should now have been completed but if this is outstanding, we will be in contact very shortly. Lastly, please ensure that your child has responded to all college/ apprenticeship applications, letting the establishments know as to whether they will potentially be attending in September, as we do not want students to miss out on their place. As we edge closer and closer to the summer of 2022, I would like to take this time to congratulate all students of the 2017 cohort and celebrate their successes they have achieved over the past 5 years. It only seems not long ago that they were walking in the door as fresh-faced Year 7s, eager and ready to see what excitement Regents Park would bring them. Following on from another set of GCSE mock exams and with now only a little over a month to go before the GCSE exam season fully gets underway, the students have shown a mature attitude towards their learning and their revision. It has been great to see so many students attending revision sessions after school, as well as the intervention sessions that run in the library every Tuesday (5:00pm-7:00pm). At these sessions students can complete targeted English, maths, science revision with a core subject specialist or their own choice of revision using the wealth of resources in the library. No need to book a space, just turn up! In regards to revision and if you have any queries and concerns about how best to help your child revise for their upcoming GCSEs, please refer to a recent letter sent by Ms Reed (Assistant Headteacher), which contains a link to a Loom video which may be able to answer any questions you may have. Likewise, please do not hesitate to contact me

Mathematics DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Foundry Lane Maths intervention at Foundry Lane has been continuing this term. One challenge Miss Birch set was to estimate some of the World Records. These included the heaviest burger, longest fingernails, longest long jump and longest hair. Once the students had estimated the values, they then had to convert these into different units. Some students came up with some really close estimates!
Maths Puzzle
The actual values are: Heaviest Burger: 914kg Longest nails: 310cm Longest long jump: 8.95m Longest hair: 16760mm
We have really enjoyed supporting Year 6 this year and wish them all luck, in their upcoming SATs. We look forward to having some fantastic mathematicians joining us in September.
Further Maths The Year 10 further maths group have continued to meet on Tuesdays after school and have done a lot over the last term! They have investigated the gradients of tangents to curves to find a ‘gradient function’ - an A level maths topic known as differentiation. We spent a session researching potential college and university courses to see where maths could take them and consider their future options before making decisions in Year 11. Many of the students are looking at potential careers in STEM, for example software engineering, environmental engineering and astronomy. To increase the challenge even more, after learning about sequences as part of their Year 10 curriculum, the further mathematicians looked at proof of sequences and their general formulae

and even attempted some previous exam questions from the University of Oxford maths admissions exams!
The group’s most recent challenge was to attempt the following proof and question, truly capturing our #challenge ethos! Prove that the coefficient of the n^3 term in a cubic sequence is
1/6 of the third difference. More generally, if the kth difference was constant, what do you think the coefficient of the n^k term will be?
Revision Tips 1. Take a break. Remember that short focused revision time is more effective than longer less focused ones. 2. No cramming or memorising formulas. A formula sheet will be provided for you, so you need to spend most of your time testing yourself and showing all your workings out. 3. Create a schedule. Make sure to keep to your schedule, find a clear space to study, wear comfortable clothing and remove all distractions. 4. Effective revision techniques: focus on revising past exam questions, practice makes you feel more confident - so keep practising. Check your gaps in knowledge and focus a bit more on those topics. 5. Start practicing under timed conditions. This can also be an open book paper either in school or at home. 6. Encourage and reward. Remember to look after yourself because your wellbeing is vital for
Revision & Preparation This summer will see our first Year 11 exams in two years, following the disruption caused by the pandemic. Year 11 students have now received the advance information guidance published by the government to help focus their revision for summer GCSE exams. This includes a formulae sheet for the exams and a topic list to help structure revision better. To support with revising and preparing for the summer exams, we have sent out a link, that will take you to the topics in the exam as well as some very useful revision sites with lots of practice, both for higher and foundation. There is a tab at the top left corner to switch between higher and foundation. We will also continue our Year 11 Thursday revision sessions on a targeted, GCSE maths intervention program, with the aim of encouraging every child to achieve their progress measure grades. This continues to be a valuable opportunity for students to gain additional GCSE maths support and guided revision prior to their final exams.

Two English undergraduate students have been joining Regents Park students at their English Enrichment sessions! The students have been debating some really rich and interesting topics and are currently writing their own dystopian fiction! I have been extremely proud of their respectful attitude towards the opinions of others, even when those opinions are in stark contrast to their own. I have also been incredibly impressed by their creativity and originality when formulating ideas for their writing!

British Science Week The science department took part in British Science Week again this year, a national event run by local organisations including primary and secondary schools. The general theme this year was ‘Growth’ and the events held, ran from the 11th to the 20th March. It has inspired a series of lessons aimed at all year groups such as: • The building of sky-scrappers using spaghetti and blue-tac. • The development of new medicinal drugs. • Population growth in multiple ecosystems. As part of the British Science Week, Regents
Modern Labs The science department is proud to have a dedicated team of scientists to be able to deliver the science curriculum to all students regardless of age, need and ability. The department also benefits from seven well- equipped, purpose-built modern laboratories that were commissioned just over a year ago.
Park entered the national poster competition and will be submitting some absolutely fabulous work from our students.
Science Revision Club As part of the continuing support to student progress, the science department runs a revision club, taking place every Friday night in our library after school and is open to all students from Year 9, 10 and 11. This is being staffed by subject specialists in biology, chemistry and physics.
GCSE Mock Exams This year, Regents Park ran mock examinations for all GCSE students in Year 9, 10 and 11. It was a first-time experience for many in Year 9 and 10, who have suffered from the repeated lockdowns and difficult events of the last 2 years. Regents Park and the science department took great pride in the student’s response and achievements and would like to wish the very best success to our Year 10 and Year 11 students in their forthcoming GCSE examinations.

‘Sister Act Jr’ Performances 29th & 30th March
We auditioned for this production back in early 2020 and planned to start rehearsing in the spring term. As with all best laid plans, things took a different direction. Some of the cast left, some decided the show wasn’t for them, but then we gained some fantastic Year 7s in September last year and the rest, they say, is history. It has taken some time to actually get ‘onto the stage’ due to extra mock exams for Year 11, but the cast, crew, the creative arts & DT team and all Regents Park staff involved have worked tirelessly to make sure we have a production this year. Our first performance was to our local primary schools, who thoroughly enjoyed it and it gave the cast a confidence boost for the evening performances. Thank you so much to all the students involved and a special thank you goes to Mr Barron and Miss Fison for all their help and support getting the show on the stage. Well done Regents Park, another great evening of entertainment from creative arts & DT. Mrs Freeman Curriculum Leader of Creative Arts

Year 9 Wire Sculpture Workshop As part of the Southampton Cultural Services, we have had a fabulous art workshop run by Southampton City Art gallery for ‘Art on Wheels’. We had the wonderful Jo come in to do a wire workshop with our Year 9 students. Jo shared some of her beautiful work created by wire and showed our students how to use wire to create their own leaves. Students had a great time experimenting with wire and tools to develop their own work. Such a wonderful experience. The music department received a welcomed financial boost last half term following the success of the GCSE music recital evening earlier in the academic year. These finances were immediately put to good use to help encourage and inspire the young musicians of Regents Park through purchasing equipment that can be put to good use both in the classroom and in future musical productions. The financial boost enabled the department to improve existing equipment through professional repairs whilst also improve the departments status by investing in three electro acoustic guitars, two electro acoustic ukuleles, two electric basses, two digital pianos, four amplifiers, three keyboard stands, a new pro quality drum kit and a set of guitar wall brackets to enable safe and secure storage of all musical instruments. The music department would like to extend its sincere gratitude for this financial boost as the benefits of this investment are already being felt within the Regents Park community as some of the new equipment was used in the musical production ‘Sister Act’ which was another successful evening where the amazing talents of so many of our students were on display. Sea City Museum Sea City Museum in Southampton kindly sent Regents Park three loan boxes with original and replica artifacts from World War Two and the tudor period. This generated a great deal of excitement and curiosity with Year 7 and 8 and created suspense throughout the department all day.
Tudors Year 7 have just finished the Tudor topic so it was fantastic to see them applying their knowledge to the various artifacts including a tudor hot water bottle and jewellery!
World War Two Year 8 have been focussing on World War Two and we have completed a timeline of events for people in Britain. Students studied newspapers and posters, played with playing cards and made an evacuation tree from the tags that were included. It really bought history to life! We hope to have more loan boxes from our work with Sea City Museum so look out for our next instalment!

the Year 8 boys. They worked very hard to beat a Cantell team that were pushing hard to level the game. The boys showed a fantastic work ethic and team mentality to work together and pull through with a 2-1 win. Their final game was against Redbridge, this time it ended in a loss, but the boys once again showed great character and fight to keep playing until the final whistle. Year 9 Year 9 have yet again, been an absolute pleasure to manage this season. They have shown incredible team work, resilience and skill throughout the season. They currently sit third out of seven in the league. They have really grown as a team and always play a great passing game. Well done to all that represented the school with great positivity!
We’ve had great attendance for the KS3 girls football club this half term, almost doubling the number of girls attending on a Tuesday after school. It’s been brilliant to see the increase in confidence from our girls and the boost these girls are receiving from our 2 Year 10 coaches. With two more confirmed games lined up for them to play, we are currently second in the league. Year 7 Year 7 have started brilliantly to extra-curricular football at Regents Park. As a year group we are consistently getting 30 students to play football after school and the students that have been selected for fixtures have represented the school brilliantly. The boys currently sit in mid table of the league after recording wins against Lordshill Oasis and Chamberlayne, as well as narrow defeats to Hamble and Oasis Mayfield. At the time of writing, we have one game left against Woodlands. Great start Year 7!
After the huge success of PE Champion Day back in December, they hosted their second major event. The Regents Park Swimming Gala and Swimathon returned after a challenging couple of years, with huge success! Over 100 swimmers across 4 year groups took part in a variety of traditional and alternative races with smiles on their faces! The atmosphere was incredible with all swimmers supporting one another in a kind and empathetic way. This year, the PE Champions have chosen to raise money for Alfie’s Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support. A huge thank you to everyone involved in such a fantastic event!
Year 10 A really positive season throughout. The students showed sportsmanship and resilience in their tougher games against schools such as Greggs and Wildern - to which we secured a number of wins and played some fantastic football.
Year 8 There was a strong showing in the final games of the season from

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
This year, we have introduced fortnightly role models. These are inspirational people from a wealth of backgrounds, who have achieved successes in life. It’s been great to see the students (and staff!) learning about different personalities in a variety of sports. Dance Live On Monday 7th February, Regents Park took part in Dance Live at Portsmouth Guildhall. It is an annual dance event with schools competing from across the south coast. Our team consisting of students from Year 7 to Year 11 were rehearsing since October to create our dance performance. They all had an amazing day competing with our piece entitled ‘The Greek Myth of Arachne and Athena’. It was our first time ever entering this competition which involved creating a dance piece performed in front of a giant LED screen. The students performed brilliantly and we received two awards – one for our concept and one for the journey to dance live video.
Outstanding achievement from our very own Lunlana in Year 10, gaining her football coaching course over February half-term, leading to development into coaching the Saints Academy girls outside of school, and our very own KS3 girls football team. A massive well-done.
An exciting opportunity is coming up for some girls in school, linking to ‘This Girl Can’ and the Women’s Euro’s 2022. This will be run by Miss Robinson, as an intervention workshop, developing our girls ambitions and aspirations, and working with our students to promote female participation at Regents Park.

World Book Day 2022
Letters to Foundry Lane Our Year 7 Spanish classes practised their school subject opinions, by writing letters to Year 5 and 6 students at Foundry Lane describing their lives at Regents Park. Students shared their favourite subjects and teachers with upcoming students and included their reasons why. Mrs Griffiths and the students at Foundry Lane were very impressed with the level of their Spanish. Buen trabajo Año 7! We were also very thankful to receive some fantastic Christmas messages from our Year 5 and 6 students at Foundry Lane! We are really looking forward to our next project together!
Mrs Sturdy lead some fantastic World Book day lessons across the department, after studying some famous book titles in French or Spanish. Our Year 7 students were then tasked with designing their favourite book cover and writing a short blurb in target language.
Dragons Den During our Year 10 unit of work on technology, students were asked to design and advertise a new piece of technology in either French or Spanish. To share some inspiration, students firstly watched a short clip of Dragons Den France or Spain and analysed their pitches.
