English This year, has seen the launch of our new guided reading program for Year 7 and 8. Students will be reading a novel as a class, however the focus will be on reading for pleasure and discussion. Like a book club for each class. As we read the books, the class will have the opportunity to discuss key events, characters and most importantly, what bit they are enjoying. Currently our Year 7s are adventuring with Lyra in Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights. Understanding the impact and effect of a heart transplant in Malorie Blacks Pig Heart Boy. As well as, exploring the idea of war in Private Peaceful by Michal Morpurgo and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Year 8s are going to be starting their guided reading and as soon as the new books arrive, they will be reading one of the following: The Life of Pi, 1985, Noughts and Crosses, Thirteen and The Five Clues. The benefits of this, will help students gain confidence, develop reading strategies, allowing all students to progress and develop a love of reading for pleasure. Year 7 students have already commented: “I am getting more and more confident with reading aloud” “The story is really interesting and I like it when Miss uses the visualiser”

“I find reading entertaining and I enjoy doing it in the library, as this is a chance to read new books.” “I like that we get to receive signatures for reading out loud, as this encourages us to feel more confident. I can really see the impact this has on me.” “I enjoy how we take turns in our class to read through something called pop-corn reading, as each week, this is different and it makes it more fun and interesting, because different people are reading out loud.”
