DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

Mathematics Bletchley Park Year 8 students had a fantastic day out at Bletchley Park on Thursday 26th September, home of the World War Two code breakers! In the morning, they became cryptologists, cracking different types of codes to solve a bigger puzzle as a team. They even got to try out one of the original Enigma machines! Students also had a tour around site from a Bletchley historian and had a chance to explore the museums and learn more about Alan Turing, wartime intelligence and the logistics of running Bletchley. Year 8 were an absolute credit to the school and we look forward to visiting again next year with Year 7.

Mini White Boards This year we have been increasing the use of mini white boards in our maths lessons. The benefits of using mini white boards are: • Encourages all students to participate • Not permanent, small corrections easy to do • Builds confidence • Whole class assessment, which provides the students with instant feedback • Identifies misconceptions which can be corrected instantly • Unexpected answers which allows for class discussions and therefore deeper understanding • Next step -modelling • Variety of activities, multiple choice, problem solving, competitions etc • Sharing good practice with the class
